Crunchyroll unveiled the first key art visual and a new trailer for Blade Runner: Black Lotus, the upcoming original anime co-production with Adult Swim based on the Blade Runner universe, during their Virtual Expo event on Thursday after the premiere of their first trailer last month at San Diego Comic-Con.
The trailer offers a first look at the opening of the series, including the original song “Feel You Now” by singer-songwriter Alessia Cara.
Set in Los Angeles in 2032, 13 years after Ridley Scott’s original 1982 film and 17 years before Denis Villeneuve’s successor in 2017, Blade Runner: Black Lotus revolves around Elle (Jessica Henwick), a mysterious woman with no memories of her past other than a locked data device and a tattoo of a black lotus. Alone and on the run, Elle must come to terms with her past to face a dark and uncertain future as she leads the fight to those who hunt her down in search of answers.
The series is said to include appearances by Niander Wallace Jr., the antagonist of Villeneuves Blade Runner 2049, this time portrayed by Wes Bentley (The hunger Games), as well as new characters in the form of Niander Wallace Sr. and LAPD Police Chief Earl Grant, played by Brian Cox (Succession) and Stephen Root (Office space) or. Will we catch a glimpse of Officer K. at some point? Cross our fingers, but for now we’ll have to wait for the series to air to find out.
Blade Runner: Black Lotus runs 13 episodes and is directed by Shinji Aramaki (Apple cores) and Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex). The series is animated by Sola Digital Arts (Ultraman 2019) and produced by Alcon Entertainment. Shinichiro Watanabe, the legendary director behind shows like Cowboy bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Carole & Tuesday, will act as the series’ creative producer.
Blade Runner: Black Lotus will air on Adult Swim and streamed on Crunchyroll when it releases this fall.
