Battlefield 2042 will be released on October 22, 2021 and will take the series back in a direction that fans have been sorely missing for a long time. However, there are also old elements in a new guise, as the large portal mode shows.
This alignment is part of a larger strategy for the brand, which revolves around live service, mobile and Free2Play, as EA boss Andrew Wilson explained in an investor meeting. Accordingly, Battlefield is also returning to a two-year release policy. But there is more: an offshoot should also appear on mobile devices.

Furthermore, Battlefield 2042 a Free2Play component contain. While Wilson won’t be more specific about this, it could be the Hazard Zone mode, which has not yet been presented in detail. At least that’s what the well-known leaker believes Tom Henderson
Andrew Wilson’s new statements (via wccftech.com) you can read here in the Europe translation:
“Do we think Battlefield will come back every two years? I would say – I think that’s our direction. But more importantly, I think Battlefield should be viewed as a service. What we announced, what we’re doing to bring this game to market is truly a revolution and reinvention of our epic warfare in the context of gameplay.
We also announced the Battlefield Portal, which will be based on user-generated content and will encourage long-term engagement with the game. And while Hazard Zone has been announced, we haven’t revealed much about what’s going on there. You will learn more about this in the coming months.
This really forms the basis of how we envision the future of a live service around Battlefield that will also include a mobile launch over time, that will include some free components, and that will really change the nature of what is released from release to release happens. Today, while we’re wondering whether a biennial launch makes sense, we’re really focusing on 365 days of engaging with the series at the platform level and on all of the devices that customers want to play on. ”

Battlefield 2042 will be the remake Dimi always wanted
A piece of the CoD cake
With the broader business model, EA apparently draws its conclusions from the recent successes of Call of Duty. The shooter competitor recently celebrated gigantic successes with the Free2Play offshoot Warzone, the mobile release Call of Duty Mobile and a functioning season model. Activision had previously stated that annual sales under the old business model decreased from year to year.
With the new business model around a season pass with cosmetic content and numerous microtransactions, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare became the most successful CoD of all time. The Free2Play aspect of Warzone also caused further sales and later even carried the following CoD: Cold War.
So it’s no wonder that EA is moving in a similar direction with Battlefield. However, Battlefield 5 already wanted to score with service, but then failed because new content did not come quickly enough. It remains to be seen whether DICE and EA can set their own fragrance brand in the service landscape with Battlefield 2042 and later releases.
So it sounds like Battlefield 2042 wants to embark on paths that are highly likely to be profitable. Editor Phil still considers Battlefield 2042 to be highly risky.
