Game news New World: An MMO for PvP fans
,
For a handful of weeks, players around the world were able to get into Aeternum, the world of the New World. The MMO developed by Amazon Games saw a huge popularity spike during this closed beta session, which we were able to try for a short time by raising a character to level 25 based on a session that focuses on the first two hours of play, we are bidding here a summary of the minds of the New World to better understand its philosophy before its September 28th release.
Pretty charming
First we have to face the facts, New World offers a completely enchanting universe. Certainly and beyond the huge technical glitch that cost many 3090 graphics cards their lives, the game with all the controls remains pretty greedy to the limit, but it is bursting with details and is rather inspired in its artistic direction. . The environments are as diverse as the different cities that are there. the changing lighting effects give the game a very nice atmosphere and the piracy overlay has its small effect, especially when it is set to music by a pretty decent soundtrack. In short, New World doesn’t have to be ashamed of its competitors visually, even if the performances are not always there at the moment.
Nervous gameplay on the character side
On the gameplay side, New World seems somewhat paradoxical in a way. Your character doesn’t actually have an archetype defined at the start of the game or a weapon of your choice. As with a TESO, for example, you only increase your mastery when you practice a weapon. Each mastery level brings with it a talent point that is distributed in a skill tree dedicated to the weapon in question, including passive and active bonuses. You can equip yourself with two complementary weapons at level 5 (of 60) and can – and should – switch from one to the other regularly in combat. This adds a real nervousness to the clashes of the game, and finding the best complementarity between weapons is a bit of a treat that is all too rarely found in MMORPGs in general. We chose a rapier / bow combo during our development and it works quite well. The same goes for other combos that will eventually allow you to develop a character that conforms to the Heal / Refuel / DPS archetypes. In short, we enjoyed playing our character during our beta session, and that’s quite a lot.
A very (too?) Old-fashioned advancement
On the other hand, New World seems to be showing pretty blatant signs of archaism in terms of progression and the variety of quests. In fact, the pattern of quests is systematically the same. Kill X monsters, collect X items in boxes … New World, in 25 levels, has never offered us a quest that managed to surprise us. Inherited straight from the first steps of MMOs, the leveling phase is based on a classicism that is a little bit surprised by 2021 here not really any staging or storytelling effort that would add some energy to these repetitive tasks. This archaism is also found in the structure of the game, which makes you go back and forth without knowing what to do with it. In fact, you can register in a city to quickly return to wherever you are on the map. But subject to a one-hour cooldown, this quick excursion won’t be of much use to you. So in this case, you must already be in one of the game’s rare sanctuaries to be able to hope that you can quickly travel to the city of your choice if you are not registered there. But aside from the fact that this trip is not necessarily abundant, the city in question must be under the control of your group.
PvP above all
In fact, you will quickly have the opportunity to pledge allegiance to one of the game’s three factions, factions that are at the heart of the game’s PvP orientation. During various battles, your faction can take control of a region and therefore its cities.. At this point, the factions can set the taxes that will affect the manufacture or fast travel of characters of opposing factions. This is certainly not a bad point and it clearly promotes PvP play, but it’s a safe bet that if you’re playing an MMO for its PvE then other suggestions will be fine. In New World, PvP is everywhere: in fortress wars, in faction missions … you can still wander around the universe without activating the PvP mode, but you could cut yourself off from it.
Because PvE, which is not very inspired in its quests, remains relatively shy from the perspective of the expeditions, of which the first, accessible at level 20-25, is quite short.. Sure, the game’s edgy gameplay helps make the ride enjoyable, but that’s arguably not the terrain New World will be hunting when it releases. In many respects, however, the game is complete, especially when it comes to crafting, and offers a very pleasant progression in the various gathering or harvesting professions. Hence, it is not uncommon for gamers who enjoy speculating to spend a lot of time researching the market to find out which component or item is most in demand by the community.
However, there are still principles around controlling areas that can skew the experience. For example, since your inventory is limited, you will have extensive storage space in every city. However, if you can see the inventory of your items dropped off in another city, that city must be under the control of your faction in order to access them. And it’s hard to be more frustrating when you’ve grown components in an area to craft items to realize that the skins you’ve stored are on the other side of the world and that it will be long miles to go they can restore.
There will be much more to see to assess the potential of the New World. New expeditions, endgame content, and several beta bug fixes to get further attention. However, the set is not uncomfortable to play and its PvP orientation is a clear bias, which could, however, distract many players from this charming universe, as the game will not shine for its PvE at launch. When it comes to longevity, Amazon Game needs a lot of ingenuity to survive in the rather ruthless world of MMOs. Regardless, the game was postponed after the beta due to the many stability issues encountered during the weeks of testing. Pretty good news considering what still needed to be done from that point of view.
