preview Call of Duty Vanguard: will post Cold War multiplayer survive the second?

After a roaring presentation over the past few weeks, we finally had the opportunity to approach the Call of Duty Vanguard multiplayer, which will land on all platforms (except the Switch) on November 5th. An all the more decisive reach for the online Black Ops Cold War, which disappointed many players. In addition to a look back at WWII, does the blockbuster Activision and Sledgehammer go back to what made the license so successful in the past? We’ll answer you in this preview after two hours of playtime.

Preview created on PS5. We haven’t had access to Call of Duty Vanguard’s Zombie Mode yet.

Vanguard Multi Open Beta: Where? If ? How? ”Or“ What?

As usual with the license, Call of Duty Vanguard will go through an open beta prior to its November 5th release. The dates: September 10-13 for those who have pre-ordered the game for PS4 and PS5; September 16-20 for all PlayStation players; September 16 to 17 on all platforms if pre-ordered; September 18th to 20th on all platforms. There are quite a few options.

Call of Duty Vanguard: will post Cold War multiplayer survive the second?

With the release of a public beta for Call of Duty Vanguard’s multiplayer, we were able to try the title online at almost 2:30 a.m. The ability to discover four different maps (there will be 16 at launch) as well as multiple game modes. The first one that was presented to us is also a novelty: it is “Patrol”, where the players have to hold a moving point zone in order to collect points. and maybe win victory. Quite an interesting addition, as unlike Domination or Modern Warfare Strategic Point, the attack doesn’t focus on static points. It will therefore be necessary to move regularly, check enemy lines of defense and angles of fire in order to hold the coveted area as long as possible. Note that, depending on the position of the latter on the map, you are more or less exposed to opponents, with phases that are sometimes very offensive and others – on the contrary – defensive. In our case we tried Patrouille sur Gavutu, a tropical stretch of beach where the remains of a village, tanks, bunkers and a warship have been abandoned. In short, there are plenty of places to hide and discover in this new mode.

BACK PEDAL AND NEWS

All of the other modes we played were classic: Domination, Team Deathmatch, and Confirmed Kill. It’s obviously a déjà vu, but the recipe keeps working, with new maps and gameplay that returns to the sensations of Modern Warfare and Warzone.. As in these two titles, weapons are harder to deal with than in Black Ops Cold War, with the added ability to lean against a Sims and slowly open doors (which always has a small effect at the beginning of the game.). Not to mention another great piece of news, Vanguard marks the return of the killstreaks. Regulars will instantly find the gameplay they love, and we can only applaud this choice. Because the gameplay is always well balanced and comfortable to hold.

While we talk about the gameplay, there’s one novelty that recently moved the Call of Duty community: the ability to shoot blindly from a ceiling in Vanguard. But don’t worry, this aspect seemed to us well regulated enough to offer a new tactical choice in combat without causing total death.. The distribution of the shot seems to have been specially adjusted in this case to avoid perverse effects. In addition, the few weapons that we could pick up (Bar, MP-40, M1 Garand …) seemed very pleasant to us, with a good feeling and a fairly significant decrease. In Call of Duty Vanguard, some of them can wear up to ten accessories. For the rest of the customization, nothing seems to have changed from Warzone and Modern Warfare.

One point on the elimination streak and assets:

This gaming session was also an opportunity to take a look at the elimination series bonuses as well as the assets. For the latter, in addition to the great classics such as Ghost, Fortified, the latest Maximum Alert and Tracker, We can notice the arrival of radar that shows on the minimap the enemies shooting without a silencer. As for killstreaks, there are also the traditional bonuses, but in World War II sauce (radar, strike, jammer, etc.) with an additional death machine after five kills and a flamethrower after nine kills. If you do ten you will unlock Attack Dogs.

A CUSTOMIZED EXPERIENCE

In addition to the gameplay and weapons, let’s take a look at the different maps we saw. After Gavutu, our gaming session with the Hôtel Royal took us to the heights of Paris, an area on two levels with enough shortcuts and angles to defeat its enemies from behind. Eagle Nest, a building in the middle of the mountains, is much more cramped and suitable for hand-to-hand combat. Finally we went to Red Star’s great place under the snow. In any case, the atmosphere and the level of detail of the maps from Vanguard is a delight, despite a level design that may be a bit too shy for the Royal Hotel, Eagle Nest and Red Star.. A level design that now houses destructible walls to clear new paths or destroy long lines of defense, like on Gravutu. A little more welcome, but far from stunning at the moment. See on the other maps.

Activision and Sledgehammer finally wanted to show us one of the other big news from Call of Duty Vanguard: Combat Pacing. In this new episode, the quick games have four filters so that players can customize their request even better to suit their style of play.. Depending on your choices, the number of players will essentially change: “Tactical” will be synonymous with 4v4, “Assault” will raise the bar 6v6, and finally “Blitz” will plunge you into 10v10 or even 24v24 clashes. Note that it will also be possible to select the “All” filter to mix up all of these experiences. At the moment it is unknown if Combat Pacing will increase the number of players on all maps. For example, we did a 16v16 game on Eagle Net, but a 24v24 game wouldn’t really work on such a small map. For the Vanguard Multi there are still two or three points to clarify, especially for the zombie mode. But it starts well.

Our impressions

As it stands, the Call of Duty Vanguard multiplayer seems to have all the maps in hand for a solid experience that is familiar with its gameplay and given a new twist in the midst of WWII with its new features and maps. The patrol mode and the destructible walls in the levels are just as welcome details as the fact that you can customize your research with “Combat Pacing”. With Call of Duty Vanguard, Activision and Sledgehammer Games seem to want to arouse our curiosity without rushing, and after Black Ops Cold War we didn’t ask for it again. All that remains is to see what the zombies have in their stomachs. But it smells nice.
