You may have already upgraded to macOS Monterey (if you have a compatible Mac) and are taking advantage of all the new features. But if you’re one of those people who need to stick with macOS Big Sur, fear not, there are updates for you too: Apple launched the Big Sur stable version 11.6.1 announcing security improvements.
macOS Big Sur might have a few more updates in the future
The update doesn’t say anything about these improvements, but it’s likely an update that prepares Macs that continue to run with Big Sur to maximum compatibility with macOS Monterey features.
As always you can free update to this version of macOS Big Sur by letting the Mac do it automatically or by forcing it from System Preferences (“Software Update” section). And knowing that it does happen from time to time, these small but important security updates for older versions of macOS will likely continue to appear in the future.
Keep in mind that if you have macOS Monterey you don’t need to install this update anymore, in fact, it won’t seem possible. But if Big Sur is the most recent version your Mac can use and so you stick to it, I recommend you to update as soon as possible.
