We take a closer look at Instinction: What is behind the primeval shooter with high-end graphics?

The prehistoric days of Turok and Dino Crisis are almost as long ago as the Cretaceous – at least when measured in Internet years. The new shooter Instinction comes out of the amber and wants to bring the dinosaurs back to life in a really high quality.

But what kind of game is it supposed to be when it comes out in September 2022 for PC, consoles and Stadia? We summarize that for you in this game presentation. Most recently, a new trailer for Instinction generated high expectations, at least in terms of visual quality.

The video was recorded in Unreal Engine 4. The finished game should even be based on the new (and potentially powerful) Unreal Engine 5 set:

That’s what Instinction is all about

A lot of information about Instinction has been sneaking through the undergrowth for a while, and developer Hashbane Interactive answered some of our questions on request.

The graphic: Graphically, Instinction wants to reach into the top dinosaur drawer and use the new Unreal Engine 5. The new code framework from Epic Games can use new technology such as Lumen for realistic lighting and with Nanite for several million polygons with high performance. Instinction is supposed to use ray tracing and DLSS to put the game world in the limelight.

The picture gallery shows how chic it looks:

The genre: Instinction sees itself as an action adventure and puts you either in an ego or shoulder perspective. Shooter elements are a central part of this. In addition to a single player mode, co-op fans can also throw themselves into an adventure in groups of four.

The gameplay: You explore a half-open game world in which you complete quests. Instinction should therefore not have a real open world that is completely freely accessible. Different biomes and inconsistent weather should provide variety and playful challenge. To experience a story about a supposedly extinct people, you explore the levels and solve environmental puzzles. With a wide range of weapons you fight against numerous different species of dinosaurs. In addition, you can ally yourself with some dinosaurs and go your way together with them. Instinction also wants to offer extensive weapon modding and many options for customizing the game experience (HUD, character customization, etc.).

The dinosaurs: Developer Hashbane wants to bring several types of dinosaurs and other beings to life. Also a short type of person, the homo Floresiensis, shall meet you. Hashbane also collects other requests from the community. So far confirmed are:

  • Acrocanthosaurus
  • Apatosaurus
  • Argentinosaurus
  • Carcharodontosaurus
  • Carnotaurus
  • Ceoplophysis
  • Coelacanth/Mawsonia
  • Diabloceratops
  • Deinotherium
  • Deinonychus
  • Dinornithiformes
  • Homo Floresiensis
  • Kronosaurus
  • Mapusaurus
  • Quetzalcoatlus
  • Sarchosucus
  • Smilodon
  • Spinosaurus
  • Stegosaurus
  • Styxosaurus
  • Suchomimus
  • Tarbosaurus
  • Temnodontosaurus
  • Thalassodromeus
  • Triceratops
  • Tyrannosaurus

Who are the developers?

Interested parties could raise an eyebrow skeptically, after all, developer Hashbane Interactive is not a common name in the gaming world so far. So there is no reference as to whether they can even achieve the promised goals. But at least in the CGI sector, Hashbane already has experience.

The studio also produces Architectural Visualization (ArchViz for short), i.e. artificially generated images of buildings and interiors. On the official website do you see the deceptively real representations. You can of course find out in good time in the GameStar test whether Instinction also comes out with a good game.
