The Amazon MMO New World is not calming down. Since the release, one problem has followed the next, players have to endure a lot, from bugs to server problems to serious exploits. The latter category includes the latest vulnerability, which even has really dangerous implications for client security.
Player in official forum and well-known YouTubers report on an exploit that is supposed to make it possible to post HTML language in the game’s chat. This sometimes expresses itself relatively harmlessly through pictures in the chat window, but also leads to game-destroying events – if the game suddenly crashes as a result.
What is the current standing? According to Amazon, the exploit should now be fixed. Nevertheless, we want to inform you here so that you are informed about the problem.
Update from October 31, 2021: Based on user feedback, we have revised the message so that we no longer incorrectly refer to the HTML language as “code”. We would also like to point out that the reasons for the crashes were probably a simple incompatibility, not a drastic security hole as initially suspected.
What’s going on there?
YouTuber Josh Strife Hayes, among others, reports that New World can crash, sometimes even if you move the mouse over certain chat messages. However, this is probably due to the fact that the game client is not 100 percent XHTML-compliant and is no indication that spoilers are injecting malicious code into the game – because this would require the simultaneous execution of Java Script or a similar programming language. In the video, Josh Strife Hayes explains his thoughts on the HTML crashes and other new problems in New World:

The mood of the community in the forum and on Reddit ranged from amused to angry to sheer bewilderment. Critics accuse the developers, among other things, of one broken game
to have published. For some, the circumstances bring bad memories of WoW. According to the cyber security company, the well-known MMO existed in 2016 G Data also danger – and also due to technical weaknesses.
Fortunately, technical problems can be resolved. GameStar editor Elena Schulz finds New World a completely different, fundamental point of criticism:
New World
Amazon should never have listened to the players
What is Amazon doing?
In an official statement on the New World forum, a community manager said the Amazon Game Studios first of all that the problem is known. Corresponding steps have been taken to prevent code from being executed in the chat in the future.
A few hours later followed another statement – a corresponding patch is now live. Accordingly, the problem should now be resolved. The developers apparently reacted very quickly here. The next few hours and days will have to show whether the exploit was successfully eliminated. Either way: a bitter aftertaste remains.

Why we stick with devaluation
In the GameStar test, our MMO experts André Baumgartner and Gloria H. Manderfeld take a close look at the game and find many positive aspects. In the end, however, there is still a devaluation due to technical deficiencies.
