Can you believe it? The PlayStation 3 was launched 15 years ago today. It was an expensive console and a messy start with hype Overload and some really bad press conferences. But Sony hasn’t given up on the PS3, and neither has gamers.

The PS3 was home to a number of great exclusives such as The Last of Us, Demon’s Souls, Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Yakuza 4. It is It’s easy to think of the PS3 as something that has always been a great game console, but it didn’t start this way.

I’m still a little annoyed that we never got to try the boomerang controller.

I remember sitting in the audience at Sony’s E3 press conference and knowing I was witnessing history then. It was one of the most embarrassing press conferences in the E3 story that has made seemingly endless memes for years. ($ 599! Huge enemy crabs!)

Stumbling blocks aside, people really wanted the PS3. When it launched on a chilly November night in Japan, there were long lines for the expensive console. with reports the gray market vendors supposedly hiring people to wait and buy the PS3.

When the initial hype subsided, reality set in. Blu-ray and Super Audio CDs were neat and all, but this wasn’t just an expensive entertainment hub. It was a video game console and, like so many machines at startup, it lacked games. Even more worrisome were developers who said that programming the console’s system architecture was difficult. It seemed like the PlayStation 3 was a disaster.

But then Sony turned things around. It gave up on the stupid Spider Man Style font that slimmed down and simplified hardware and released a sleeker PS3 Slim in September 2009. It was an instant hit. The PS3 rose from the pile of dust and turned things around in an almost unprecedented way.

The PlayStation 3 never lived up to the initial hype. But it lived long enough to be a great console.
