Will it be possible to find adult films and series on Disney + in the future? Internally, this should be up for debate at the Maus Group, as Netzwelt reveals to you.
- Will Disney + become an adult streaming service in the future?
- According to an insider report, internal debates about the future direction of the streaming offer should rage at the Maus Group.
- The background to this is likely to be the disappointing growth of Disney +.
The popular streaming service Disney + stands for classic Disney productions such as “Aladdin” or “Frozen”, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars. What all of this Disney + content has in common is that it is suitable for minors. Even a Marvel title like “Marvel’s The Avengers” is approved for ages 13 and over in the USA – and in Germany for ages 12 and up.

Like the website Puck but now reported, internally at the Disney group is currently one “heated discussion” romp about the future direction of Disney +. The question or the point of contention is: Should Disney + remain adult-free in the future – or should it also offer “adult content”?
Disney + is growing more slowly than Netflix
The background to the discussion is likely to be the disappointing increase in subscribers for the mouse streaming service, which was reported only a few days ago. Because only almost 2 million new customers was able to win Disney + in the third quarter of this year (118 million subscriptions in total).
The over-competitor Netflix grew in the same period 4.4 million subscribers worldwide – which is also due to the huge success of the South Korean series “Squid Game” (214 million subscriptions in total).
According to the Puck report, the current CEO Bob Chapek and the former CEO Bob Iger are now facing each other internally at Disney. Iger should therefore want to stick to Disney’s traditionally family-friendly approach to Disney +. Chapek, on the other hand, wants more adult content on the platform.
Competitors like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or (in the USA) HBO Max are by no means limited to adult films and series. Presumably, so the consideration, Disney + can only catch up or overtake the mentioned competition and especially Netflix in the long term if adult content is also offered on the mouse streaming service.
Despite all the popularity of Marvel, Star Wars and Co., Disney + is currently a niche streaming offer.
Incidentally, this discussion relates primarily to the United States. Here in Germany there has been an offer for titles such as “Predator”, “Alien” or the dirty “Deadpool” with Ryan Reynolds since February 23, 2021 with the adult section Disney + Star. At Star, these definitely adult works are well protected from children’s eyes behind a pin.
In the USA, however, the Disney group distributes adult content and titles to other streaming services and TV channels such as Hulu, FX or ABC, which also belong to the Disney group.
