When it comes to Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the modding scene has been nothing short of spectacular. Fans have been busy creating all sorts of takes on Hyrule over the past few years, including entire unofficial DLC packs and all sorts of other chaotic changes to the base game, and this latest effort is yet another impressive addition.
Known Breath of the Wild modder Waikuteru is back at it again, this time creating a Randomiser that mixes everything up and should keep even the most experienced players on their toes. Revealed today in a YouTube premiere, the new mod randomises the items you find, items you’re given by NPCs, as well as enemy drops themselves. Even warping via the Sheikah Slate or going in and out of Shrines can be randomised too – who knows where you’ll end up!
But that’s only scratching the surface. Waikuteru tells us that the project has taken “hundreds of hours of work”, providing us with a list of some of the randomiser’s most impressive features. You can find the list below; note that the randomiser can steal items from your pouch without warning, give or take away your rupees, make Lynels and Guardians just appear anywhere, heal you up or cause you damage at any time, and more. It sounds bonkers.
“I built a new system which I named ‘The Randomizer Cycle’. This cycle will appear randomly and picks one of many, many options that will change your game on the fly. The longer the Randomizer Cycle does not trigger/choose an option, the higher the chance gets which results in a 100% chance eventually.
Randomizer – Spawn: This will make enemies spawn everywhere across Hyrule – these enemies have randomized weapons too. The chosen option can be reverted.
Randomizer – Prohibition: Will set prohibitions such as saving, warping, using shrines, eating, drinking, killing time, etc. The chosen option can be reverted.
Randomizer – Time: The time will change on the fly which results in changing of weather, lighting and enemy behaviour (e.g. sleeping) and schedules of NPCs.
Randomizer – Environment: Will change the environment such as setting everything on fire (e.g. Volcano Eldin), making it cold (e.g. Hebra Mountains) or hot (Gerudo Desert). Setting a specific so-called “palette” can occur too such as the Lost Woods fog (incl. music), complete darkness, sandstorm, etc.
Randomizer – Take Equipment: One of the player’s equipment will be taken out of his pouch which can result in dangerous situations and increases the excitement.
Randomizer – Money: A random amount of rupees will be either lost or credited to the player.
Randomizer – Damage and Heal: Can either damage or heal the player.
Randomizer – Get Item: The player will receive an item. This can include everything such as Small Swords, Large Swords, Spears, Shields, Bows, Armor parts, Fruits, Meat, Insects, Plants, etc.
Randomizer – Warp: Will warp the player to different spawn points. This can include warping the player to a different world too. E.g. from normal overworld to divine beast.
Waikuteru plans to launch the mod for free on Christmas Day, although as is the case with any fan-made mod like this, we should warn you that this isn’t officially sanctioned by Nintendo. Still, seeing what fans can do will always impress us and this mod in particular sounds like it’d be a lot of fun.
