The year is 2007. I play a game on Xbox Live Arcade called Wing Commander Arena. It’s a top-down shooter and I hate it. This is not Lieutenant colonel. Why didn’t anyone make a new one Lieutenant colonel.
It’s 1993. I’m sitting in my living room trying to make a boot disk to keep my aging SX33 PC Chris Roberts’ Squadron Commander III. I succeed, but a mission takes 23 minutes to load.
The year is 2012. Chris Roberts, the creator of Lieutenant colonel, announces a new video game. It comes to Kickstarter, an online marketplace where fans can buy things that aren’t done yet. The game is called Star Citizen. It will be released in 2015.
It’s 1999. Freddie Prinze Jnr. flies through space in a starfighter that looks like a ride out of a 1950s amusement park. This is not Lieutenant colonel. I don’t enjoy that.
It’s 2015. Star Citizen has raised over $ 100 million but has not yet been released despite original plans. In 2012 Roberts had said, “We are already one year old – another two years brings us to 3 in total, which is ideal. More and things would start to get stale ”. I am anxious.
It’s 1991. I’m playing Squadron Commander II, and I am impressed by the branching campaign structure and the space opera storyline. I hope the series never ends.
The year is 2020. Fans have now spent $ 300 million on a game that isn’t out yet. Star Citizens Single player campaign, Squadron 42nd, should appear in 2016. Then in 2018. At least one beta should appear in 2020. In October 2020, Roberts says, “We still have a way to go before we get into beta”. I don’t worry anymore I find that very funny now.
It’s 2021. The developers of this video game have now raised over $ 400 million by fans for a game that isn’t out yet and has been in development for a decade now. lol.
