Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot: Old story, new fun

Ball, Dragon, Fun, Kakarot, story

Dragon Ball Z is one of the most popular manga and anime series of all time. The story of monkey boy Son Goku, his friends, iconic characters, cool fights, magic bullets, and a giant dragon that fulfills wishes, most of you know by heart. Exactly this story tells Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot again. Is not that boring?

During our preview event, we were able to experience the adventures of Son Goku from the beginning, and that with the original voice actors from Japan. It feels like we are looking back on a good friend's life: he has told the story a few times, but we still like to hear it again and again. During the more than 40-hour role-playing game, Son Goku faces his most important enemies and will step in front of God, failing to win some fights.

All important characters are included: From Piccolo, who is Goku's biggest opponent, to Vegeta, to the chocolate-loving Boo. In order to survive in the battles against them, your Saiyajin must train enough and develop further. Typically for an RPG, this happens with experience gained in combat and by completing quests. In this way Son Goku becomes stronger and gains additional skills.

Off to the kitchen

If that is not enough to stand up to an enemy, you should eat your favorite dish. After all, Son Goku has an almost insatiable appetite. Before a hard fight, quickly eat a fish cooked by Bulma or pick an apple from the next tree. Depending on the court, you will receive various status improvements to help you in the next battles.

For snacks, you should improve the cooking skills of Bulma. This happens on the so-called community board. On this virtual pin board, all friends made so far can be divided into different categories and linked together. So the great cook Bulma gets even better when you join Son Gohan as a kitchen helper with his mother Chi-Chi on this community board. Son Goku, on the other hand, is in better hands on a board with Krillin: They have only limited success in the kitchen, but in combat, the talents of the two complement each other very well.

As you progress through the game, collect the so-called soul badges of each character and place them on the various community boards to gain additional benefits in the game. If the fighting is still too difficult, it is best to complete a training session on the practice sites spread all over the world. There you have the chance to learn new attacks and to test your techniques before the big battle.

Into the fight!

Now we come to the actual fights. In addition to the small enemies that fly across the map, the game sends you from an important fight from Goku's story to the next one and therefore runs quite linear. After you have completed the first tutorial and completed a few small missions, you will quickly be hurled into one of the most important battles of Son Goku's career.

If you have already played other games of the series, for example Dragon Ball Z: Xenoverse, you will find the control of Kakarot familiar. Otherwise, get used to flying, charging AI, and firing attacks quickly, otherwise you will not stand a chance against Radditz. The characteristic enemy moves with lightning speed and breaks through your permanent attacks at some point your cover. He also deals with his surface attacks of great damage, which you can escape only by constant movement and timely evasion.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot – Paris Games Week 2019 Trailer

The new trailer from the Paris Games Week sheds light on the key moments of the Boo-Arc.

As a famous Saiyajin, however, her Radditz is not defenseless. At this time, Son Goku already mastered some melee attacks, energy balls and the ability to throw away the enemy with a power wave. If the enemy is paralyzed or distracted for a moment, now is the time for Kamehameha.

At the beginning, Son Goku is your only fighter, but over time other playable characters and helpers are added. Team members are interesting as they help you fight extra attacks and healing. Each character has several life lines. At the latest when these fall into the red area, you should use a shortcut to the healing drink grab, otherwise the fight is damn hard.

Difficult flight deposits

The locomotion in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is such a thing. Some characters are able to fly because of their abilities, while other characters use vehicles to move or can run at lightning speed. Unfortunately, the technical implementation in some places hooks: Although flying with Jindujun claimed only a few buttons on the controller, tact is essential here to follow an exact route, because the direction inputs are implemented very directly.

Whenever you move through the open areas of the world with Son Goku or any of the other playable characters, you will discover Z-balls. Of them there are different types, which are colored to match the respective element. So if you are looking for blue variants, you will have to search for waters while green balls float over the treetops.

Quickly you realize that they are indispensable for receiving various super attacks and therefore should always be collected. Especially in the first hours of play this also offers a good opportunity to train with Jindujun or Piccolo your flying skills. If you have the spin with the little cloud, you can grab the ring-shaped Z-points in seconds and feel like Son Goku in the anime-opening.

To the incidental missions can be said after three hours, not much. According to Bandai Namco, you should get smaller and bigger tasks from the characters in the game world. The first sidequest on the island of Muten-Roshi was ridiculously simple. But it does not seem to be a big challenge either. Rather, the side missions to tell more about the characters and to remember their role in the anime. The same applies to the small excerpts from the past, which you can find everywhere in the world.

The areas are strongly based on the anime and show typical cities and areas of Dragon Ball Z. Accordingly, fighting does not take place between the dealers, but among other things, outside in the canyon – after all, you do not want to hurt any innocent! The idea to keep it like anime and to renounce countless nameless figures, is in principle good. However, large parts of the game seem to be extinct, which makes us a bit thoughtful …
