Fall is a busy time for Apple. In 2020, the company hosted events in September, October, and November and found time in December to launch the AirPods Max. This year has been a little quieter, with an event in September and another in October. What do you have in mind for December?
Our suspicion, given what has happened historically and the business benefits of launching products in time for Christmas, is that it will be a quiet month. But there are several major Apple products that need updating, and in this article we take a look at the likelihood of them being released before 2022.
Mac mini
In this article, you will find a lot of pessimism, but, of all, the Mac mini is the one with the most options to launch in December. In fact, it was a huge surprise that Apple didn’t decide to present it at its October event.
At the end of August, Mark Gurman predicted in an article by Bloomberg that the new Mac mini would be released “in the next few months,” which also includes December. Now we know how vague his prediction is, so maybe he was referring to spring 2022.
Instead of replacing the Mac mini with the M1 that arrived last year, the new (surely redesigned) model would arrive as a more powerful alternative.
Odds: 4/10
Ipod touch
Yes, the iPod touch, this device that we did not know for a long time.
Last May, several reports assured that a new iPod touch was in development and would arrive in the fall of 2021. December is hardly fall anymore, but that could be the time when Apple decided. to launch it.
Odds: 3/10
ipad air
The new iPad Air is next Tablet Apple that should be updated, since the other four models were renewed in 2021. It is clear that the company is working on it, but launching it in December would be a rare thing, soon after the update of the iPad mini and iPad 10, 2 “in September.
We’re pretty confident that we’ll have to wait until next year, and this is also confirmed by sources in the supply chain.
Odds: 2.5 / 10
Macbook Air
The first MacBook Air with M1 arrived in November 2020 and has since been eclipsed by the new MacBook Pro with M1 Pro / M1 Max from 2021. An updated model is expected to arrive in the near future, but surely not this year.
Apple is believed to be developing a new MacBook Air with a miniLED display and a redesign that will ditch the classic shape of the curved edges. But it’s highly unlikely to happen this month. In fact, it’s set to arrive in 2022 and we’re betting it’ll be during a spring event in March or April (although that may wait until the June WWDC).
Odds: 2/10
iMac
Apple’s iMac lineup is a bit complicated and should be viewed as two separate products: a cheaper consumer version (the current 24 “iMac arriving in April) and a premium for professional users (current iMac 27 “) so you can better predict when they will be updated.
The mainstream 24 “iMac is in great shape, but the larger iMac (which still uses Intel chips) needs an update. As with the MacBook Air, the lack of leaks suggests that it is still in development.
We don’t expect to see a new large iMac (which is expected to have a 30 “or even 32” larger screen than it does today) until Spring 2022 at the earliest, and they might even wait until the WWDC in June.
Odds: 2/10
AirPods Pro
Experts strongly agree that the second-gen AirPods Pro won’t arrive until 2022, and who should I turn to. They are very unlikely to arrive sooner, really.
But there are two things you need to consider. This is the kind of audio product premium which Apple could launch in time for Christmas, as it did with the AirPods Max in December of last year. And also, the original model arrived a long time ago, which no longer shines as much as the new AirPods 3.
Odds: 1.5 / 10
Mac Pro
If Apple is releasing something this month, it will almost certainly do so via a press release, and not at an event. December events are very rare; I only remember what happened in 2019, but it was not a launch event but to announce the best apps of the year.
Many of the products in this article could be announced in a press release, but not the Mac Pro, that’s too visible. We will have to wait until next year.
Odds: 0.5 / 10
iPhone SE3
For nothing. Wait until next spring for the new iPhone SE 3.
Odds: 0.1 / 10
So what will Apple launch in December?
Most likely, none of the Equipment. But there are plenty of other Apple products of one type or another coming in December.
Three to five new games are expected to debut on Apple Arcade, for example. In the category “next version” we find Dandara: Trials of Fear +, Oddmar +, Separating Creatures + and Disney melee mania, so they can come now.
New content is also coming to Apple TV +, especially during the holidays. We have to wait for series and seasonal films like Snoopy Presents: For Auld Lang Syne and Mariah’s Christmas: the magic continues.
But more importantly, while more boring, this month’s Apple releases could only come in the form of updates from Software. iOS 15.2 and iPadOS 15.2 will allow iPhone and iPad users to access the Privacy Report app and the new Legacy Contacts feature. macOS 12.1, on the other hand, will bring SharePlay to the Mac.
And all these updates from SoftwareOf course, they will include solutions for Bugs and errors, which could be essential to protect you against attacks or to prevent your device from malfunctioning. And isn’t that better than having a new MacBook Air?
Well, maybe not. At the end of the month we’ll predict January releases, but in the meantime you can read our forecast for 2022.
