Netflix has officially canceled the live action Cowboy bebop Adjustment after only one season, after a Report from The Hollywood Reporter.
Although the show has received around 74 million viewer hours worldwide since its debut, THR reports that viewership fell in the weeks that followed.
Based on the hugely popular and classic 1998 anime, Cowboy bebop is just one of many anime adaptations that fall short of what fans loved about the original. Netflix Cowboy bebop seemed to have difficulty finding his audience; it managed to mimic the look of the show, but in its attempt to become something new, it ended up feeling too wooden and shallow. It was a sound explosion that made people scratch their heads a lot.
For their part, the cast and crew of the show always hoped for Netflix Cowboy bebop would be more than just a rehash of the anime; Showrunner André Nemec wanted to remix and remaster the original, with plenty of opportunities to pull from below. Season 1 left the bebop crew in quite a cliffhanger: Faye left to find out more about where she was from; Jet kicked Spike off his ship; and Spike, drunk and mourning his loss of friendships as well as the woman he believed he loved, stumbles into fan favorite Ed, who says Spike has to help her.
For everything Nemec and the crew set up in Season 2 – with the introduction of Ed and the “Butterfly Man” – Netflix is done with the show. At least we will always have a John Cho performance for the ages (plus the original anime).
