Game news Deathloop, Asterix & Obelix … the best French games of 2021
Among the hundreds of video game productions released this year, some Made in France creations have managed to stand out from the crowd. Here is a selection of eight French favorites.
Death loop
It’s difficult to talk about the French video game landscape of 2021 without mentioning it Death loop. Arkane’s latest production, much more action-packed than a Dishonored, is based on a trendy concept: the time warp, caused here by a sophisticated installation that is protected by an army of warriors. Colt and Julianna clash relentlessly on Blackreef Island. The former aims to break the never-ending cycle while the latter seems to be in full bloom there. To survive and put an end to this nightmare, Colt must play it cautiously, hack a number of items and learn from the many deaths he faces. Rated 16/20 in our columns, we’ve recognized the game’s top level level design, a wide range of skills and improvements to develop a clean style, and a truly exhilarating rise to power.
Street 96
Road 96 is a narrative road trip inspired by the films of Tarantino and the Coen brothers, the work of Yoan Fanise (Unknown Soldiers: Memories of the Great War, 11-11: Memories Retold) under the aegis of his DigixArt studio. A procedural adventure, the game takes on the role of a handful of young runaways determined to flee the land of Petria under the yoke of President Tyrak. In the course of fateful encounters on American streets, you will be faced with political decisions: join a small radical opposition group to overthrow the government, take a progressive position, or abstain from voting. The choice of movement also determines the end of the adventure between bus, taxi, hitchhiking or on foot. Rated 15/20 in our columns, we found the game to have solid storytelling, unique structure, and a great atmosphere.

Asterix & Obelix: Beat Them All!
Freshly published by Microids, Asterix & Obelix: Beat Them All! invites us to find the irreducible Gauls in a 2D Streets of Rage Beat’em up. This new video game adaptation of the famous comic series by Goscinny and Uderzo illustrates the emblematic settings of the saga in the grip of hordes of Romans. The hand-drawn decorations are by Philippe Dessoly, the author of the Mr. Nutz and Toki games. Lovers of the challenge will find their account in parallel in the free mode, which is available once the story has been completed through its 50 levels. We gave the game a score of 16/20, especially for its artistic direction that hits the bull’s eye, its balance between strategy and release, or even its collaborative mode that changes the experience.

mankind
Appreciated by 4X enthusiasts this year, mankind assigns you to lead humanity to conquer the stars. There are no fixed victory conditions in the program, but the opportunity to give the players the opportunity to leave the traces of their cultures in the evolution of mankind. In each epoch (ancient, prehistoric, modern …) the player selects one culture from among others, knowing that up to 60 can be assigned. It will then be a matter of making moral decisions, making great scientific breakthroughs, or reliving emblematic historical events. Rated 16/20 at JV, the game offers a really good idea with cultural change by epoch, a very well thought out nomadic start to the game, the option of a purely peaceful approach, and narrative events that work well. A game by Amplitude Studios, owned by Sega.
Solasta: Master’s crown
Brewed by the small, passionate team at Tactical Adventures, Solasta: Master’s crown is a tactical CRPG that invites you to assemble a team of 4 adventurers chosen from a range of classes and races. Of course, everyone has strengths and weaknesses that need to be exploited. The title largely relies on its vertical and dense turn-based combat rather than its narrative. Rated 16/20 at JV, the game turns out to be a very good tactical D&D-based role-playing game. We recognize deep fights in him, a very well used verticality, a very complete character creation and difficulty parameters à la carte. Mathieu Girard, Founder, CEO and Creative Director of Tactical Adventures said he “I’ve always dreamed of creating Solasta and translating my passion for these pencil and paper games into video game format.“
Wartales
Just released on PC, Wartales is an open world role-playing game in which you lead a whole group of mercenaries through a vast medieval universe. It has been 1,000 years since the Edora Empire fell due to a devastating plague. Mercenaries, bandits and thieves must survive in hostile countries. Your goal is only to keep yourself alive; a goal that bypasses exploration, recruiting of companions, and collecting bounties. You will also need to draw your guns to counter the wild animals and bandits that get in your way. It will finally be possible to accept contracts asking you to deliver nice villagers or other characters with much less pure souls. A Shiro Games production.
