What takes a long time is finally good: Ubisoft has officially confirmed the comeback of the stealth action series Splinter Cell – in the form of a remake.
Fans of Sam Fisher and the Splinter Cell series finally have official reason to be happy: After almost years of speculation about a comeback of the franchise, Ubisoft has actually done nails today and officially confirmed this.
However, you won’t be able to enjoy a completely new part for the time being, because Ubisoft is currently working on a remake of the first part from 2002. The first Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell is to be fundamentally redesigned and brought up to the latest technical standards.
Ubisoft Toronto is responsible for this and is developing a remake based on the Snowdrop Engine. This first appeared in Tom Clancy’s The Division in 2016 and is also used in Ubisoft’s promising upcoming Avatar and Star Wars titles.
In an interview, technical producer Peter Handrinos emphasizes that it is time to finally get back to the franchise. It was “enough time to miss a complete generation of consoles,” he says; Finally, the last series spin-off, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, was released in 2013.
It will now take the time to find out exactly what the progress means for the game of light and shadow, which is so important in the stealth title, as well as for animation technology, gameplay, AI and audio, it said. As a result, the fans should also be able to expect something new, although they want to convey the same feeling as two decades ago.
The original was released in 2002 for GameCube, PS2, PC and Xbox, so it will be celebrating its 20th anniversary next year. There is initially no release time window for the remake, nor is there a specific naming of platforms.
Nevertheless, the remake is only supposed to be the starting shot, because according to the creative director it will lay “a solid foundation for the future of Splinter Cell”. So it seems like Ubisoft has more plans for Splinter Cell fans.
