Trying to make sense of Google’s whereabouts in messaging guarantees a good puzzle. Its strongest bets today are Google Duo, Google Meet, and Google Messages, but rumors for the past year have been that Duo and Meet would be intended to merge.
Codenamed Duet, the resulting product would represent the best of both worlds, suitable for both consumers and business users. The latest information collected by 9to5Google informs us of a small readjustment in the plan by which simply efforts would focus on Google Meet.
Can it only be one?
Since last year, the entire Google messaging offering has been under the leadership of Javier Soltero, VP of GSuite, Messages, Duo and Telephone, and rumors of product mergers were not long in coming. The two video calling apps: Google Meets and Google Duo would merge to make way for a new product under the code name Duet, according to rumors gathered by 9to5Google.
Now the same post is updating its information stating that although plans to remove Google Duo continue, the way to do it would be a different way. An ambivalent app would no longer be sought after for users and businesses, but instead efforts would be focused on Google Meet for businesses, without the need to focus on personal reach for home users.
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the needs and expectations of video calling applications, in addition to forcing users to lose their fear of business applications like Zoom or at least an intuitive way to join a call via a link. . This would be one of the reasons why Google would focus more on business customers
Specifically, Google Meet is reportedly poised to add end-to-end encryption and the ability to call someone from phone number rather than by mail or by link, but otherwise you should not expect many more changes from this merger of services, which looks more like an absorption than a merger.
For now Google denies the major, assuring in a statement to the publication their commitment to Google Duo and stating that they have a rich track record with news for consumers and business users for the next year, and listing several of the news that Google Duo has received since the beginning of the rumors.
The truth is, Google Duo received some updates, yes, but in most cases these were small tweaks like the Material You interface. While, The absorption of Google Duo by Meet seems more and more evidentespecially since it has added masks and filters. We will have to wait to see how the story of this curious duo ends.
