Lies of P developer Neowiz was recently interviewed by Famitsu and discussed a lot of information regarding the game. On December 24th, Famitsu released an interview that outlined a lot of thoughts that the team had on the title.
Lies of P Developer Interview and New Info
We break down all the new Lies of P information revealed in the recent Japanese interview with the developer.
- Genre: Souls-like, Action RPG
- Developed by: Neowiz
- Published by: Neowiz
- Release Date: 2023 or beyond
- Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
Keep in mind that the interview released was purely in Japanese. The information therein was translated via Google, so there may be some meaning lost in translation or erroneous terms. The answers presented to Famitsu were also those of the whole studio, and not just one individual, such as the game director.
Lies of P Release Date
One of the earliest questions presented to the team was related to the release date of Lies of P. Unfortunately, they have confirmed that the game will not release in 2022. Even further, they are unable to provide an exact date at all. They estimate that the game would be about 30% complete overall, but it is hard to give a solid number as they keep iterating on things that they feel they need to improve upon. It seems they are quite passionate about the project and want to do it right.
They did confirm though that the game will be released alongside previous-gen consoles, the PS4 and Xbox One. It will still come out on PC, as previously announced as it is available on Steam. The game will be in English, with Japanese voice and audio being considered.
Dark Souls as an Inspiration
The team at Neowiz is humbled and honoured to be compared to some of the greatest video games of all time. As the inspiration is quite obvious as per the look and feel of the trailer, fans can’t help but compare Lies of P to those games. While they are trying to build upon the souls-like genre, they also want to assure us that they will be trying some things differently. One of them is that instead of the usual couple of dozen weapons available, they will be a lot more usable by the player. More on this later.
Visuals feel definitely looks like something from either Bloodbourne or Dark Souls. They took inspiration as well from 19th century France. Neowiz is trying to create an interconnected world with different themes and views. They want to be able to create seamless transitions between different biomes, each distinct from the other but with similar feels.
However, no multiplayer is being considered at this time so you won’t be able to invade other peoples’ games, nor request assistance. You’re all on your own in this.
Tools of Destruction
Main Weapons
Neowiz intends for there to be about 30 weapons for players to use. However, they are implementing what they call the weapon blending system. This system will allow players to disassemble their unused weapons and combine the parts with others, creating new combinations. In total, there should be about a hundred possible combinations.
Pinnochio will also get new attacks and moves depending on what weapon combination he has equipped.
The Slave Arm
Another system that you will have is called the “Slave Arm”, which allows you to customize your left arm. You can augment your play style with 8 different attachments. So far we know that you can equip a Flamethrower and Wire Hoook to the left arm.
The logic between these choices is that the developers want Lies of P players to keep changing up their play style. They do not want players sticking to just one weapon that they get used to.
The Lies of P Story
Pinnochio’s Tale
Neowiz will be borrowing elements from the original story, including its characters such as Pinnochio. They will be retaining the rough flow, specifically the element about lies, but the events, relationships, betrayals and plot will all be unique to the game. The story and concepts will be that of an adult tale.
As with the original story, Pinnochio’s ultimate goal is to become human. However, contrary to the original, in order to become human, one must lie. Pinnochio’s humanity will be determined by how he lies. These lies are the choices that you must make to reach this ultimate goal.
Lies will affect in-game quests and the types of enemies you encounter. Even the ending will change depending on the lies that you make. All in all, Lies of P is planned to have 3 different endings. It should take players about 30 hours for a single playthrough.
Does Pinnochio’s Nose Grow?
No, confirms developer Neowiz. Adding this would detract from the character’s coolness, and thus they chose not to include it. However, the lies you make will be represented as a different characteristic elsewhere. It has not been announced yet what this will look like though.
The Wooden Puppets
It looks like one of the major enemy types that Pinnochio will face off against are wooden puppets. These machinations are dolls created by the city of Krat. They were initially made to replace the hard labour force of the city, but eventually became part of the culture. Hence, they became widespread.
For some unknown reason, these creations attacked their makers and took control of the city.
Who is Neowiz?
Developer Neowiz is no stranger to video games. They mostly have experience in creating multiplayer games, the most prominent of which is Bless Unleashed.
That was a lot of information to take in, definitely. We are merely scratching the surface here, as the game is not even halfway done. Neowiz promises to show more elements that will make them stand out more. They will prove to everyone this will be able to differentiate itself from its inspirations, Dark Souls and Bloodbourne.
