RX 7000 up to 3 GHz fast

fast, GHz

AMD’s current generation of graphics cards, the Radeon RX 6000, is a complete success for the company: For the first time in a number of years, it has succeeded in attacking competitor Nvidia in the high-end segment, and in some cases even surpassing it. Nvidia has a clear lead when it comes to ray tracing and the AI upscaler DLSS, but when it comes to pure rasterization performance, AMD is at least on par.

The reason for this is the significantly higher clock rates of the RX 6800 XT and Co. compared to the RTX-3000 series from Nvidia. The RX 6700 XT, for example, clocks up to almost 2.6 GHz ex works, the RX 6800 XT up to 2,250 MHz. The RTX 3070 officially ends at 1,725 MHz, in practice we see a maximum of around 2.0 GHz, depending on the custom model. The clock advantage is most noticeable the lower the resolution used.

With the RX-7000 series, AMD allegedly wants to go one step further. At least that’s what a tweet by the well-known hardware speaker Greymon55 shows:

RX 7900 XT

The full configuration of the Navi 31, presumably called the RX 7900 XT, has 60 WGPs (Work Group Processors) corresponding to 15,360 processing units. In addition, there should be 256 MByte 3D Infinity Cache on it. The whole thing paired with a clock rate of around 2.5 GHz should – if the leaks and rumors prove to be true – result in an explosive mixture.

Rumors speak of a doubling or tripling of the performance compared to the RX 6900 XT. This may also apply to theoretical computing power, but experience has shown that not that much remains of it in practice.

RX 7700 XT

The same applies to Navi 32. The new middle class is to be equipped with 40 WGPs (10,240 cores) and 192 MByte Infinity Cache. According to Greymon55, the maximum clock rate is between 2.6 and 2.8 GHz. Theoretically, this results in a performance that more than doubles that of the RX 6900 XT, but as I said: probably only on paper.

Both Navi 31 and Navi 32 should benefit from the new chiplet design for graphics cards and thus bring AMD a possibly decisive advantage over Nvidia:

RX 7600 XT

Navi 33 should, contrary to previous leaks only 16 WGPs (4,096 cores) instead of 20 WGPs (5,120 cores) and 64 MB Infinity Cache. In return, with a view to the clock rate of 2.8 to 3.0 GHz. The upcoming entry-level class should achieve the performance level of the RX 6900 XT, which Greymon55 confirms once again when asked by 3DCenter.org (see the tweet embedded above).

The 1,024 fewer arithmetic units should be due to the significantly higher clock rates and general gains in performance are compensated for by increasing the IPC (Instructions per Cycle).
