Game news Everwild: Uncomfortable New Rumors About Xbox Exclusive
Everwild, the next game from Studio Rare (Sea of Thieves), has been quiet since it was announced two years ago. And for good reason the title would know a rather complicated development that an insider describes as a “real mess”.
Where’s Everwild?
Microsoft has many projects under development in its studios including Starfield, Fable, Avowed, Hellblade 2, State of Decay 3, Perfect Dark, The Outer Worlds 2, or even Forza Motorsport 8. Everwild is undoubtedly one of the most mysterious. Aside from a cinematic trailer that was unveiled in November 2019, nothing was shown on this new magical license who promises “unique and unforgettable experiences in a magical world as true as nature”. Officially without a release date, the title should only land after several years, to blame for a development that is complicated to say the least.
Last June, the VGC site claimed that the project restarted after its creative director Simon Woodroffe left. And if Gary Napper (Alien Isolation) recently joined development as Design Director, The direction that Everwild will take rarely seems to have still not been clearly defined According to insiders Jeff Grubb and Nick “Shpeshal Nick” Baker who talked about it in the Podcast XboxEra.
Everwild is a mess. They try to talk about it diplomatically in public, they say, “Oh, people hear things about the creative director’s departure” and “Oh, that’s an exaggeration”. It’s not that far-fetched. You restarted it and you are unsure of exactly what state it is really in in terms of expectations. You’re still trying to figure it out and it’s a mess. Not only do I use colorful descriptions, the people who work on it don’t know what’s going on with this game.
The good news for Rare is that Sea of Thieves continues to hit the bull’s eye, especially on Steam, where it just passed five million copies sold.
Project Belfry and the next Obsidian game planned for 2022?
Two other Xbox projects were briefly mentioned by Jeff Grubb and Nick Baker on their podcast, starting with “Pentiment”. Not officially announced, the title was only rumored last month. It would be an RPG similar to Disco Elysium by a small team of twelve people from the Obsidian Studio who work on several projects at the same time (Avowed, The Outer Worlds 2, Grounded …). Jeff Grubb says his release should come “in the next twelve months”. Project Belfry, also an unofficial game, would also be slated for 2022. This would be a side scrolling action RPG like Dragon’s Crown, developed for Xbox by Stoic Studio, best known for The Banner Saga.
