We already deliver the awards for the best video games and we talk about the Best Movies, series Y anime of the year, but we can’t let 2021 end without talking about the reason we liked these works so much: their characters.
Over the past 12 months, they fell in love with us and helped us get through a rather difficult season. In our always humble opinion, these are the best characters we met in the movies, series and video games of 2021.
Lady Alcina Dimitrescu (Resident Evil Village)
If there was a true icon for the world of video games this year, it was this huge vampire lady. It is really sad that we can only “enjoy” his presence for less than a quarter of the game, because he shocked us with his presence and unleashed the imaginations of hundreds of horny male and female players. We hope to find her again in the DLCs, and we promise that this time we won’t get caught on purpose. Here you can find all our content about this title.
Kyojuro Rengoku (Kyojuro Rengoku (Kimetsu no Yaiba)
This is another character we spend less time with than we would have liked. The Pillar of Fire impressed us with his curious expression and wild eyebrows when we met him in the first season of the anime, but he won our hearts in the movie. The infinite train thanks to his fun personality and impressive fighting skills. We miss him, but at least we got to see a little more of him early in the show’s second season.
Selene Vassos (Returnal)
To talk about the protagonist of this intriguing game of time loops, we will quote a portion of our review: “For most of the game, Selene is characterized as a stoic woman. However, this tough character is a cover for his trauma. We are not referring to the one caused by the constant deaths, but one much older and ingrained in his mind. However, beyond all that, the protagonist of Returnal it is characterized by its perseverance. This is what makes it easy to feel sympathy for her, as players also yearn to break the cycle. “
Father Paul Hill (Midnight mass)
This year we spent many hours watching series on Netflix and we met great characters, but none of them impressed us as much as the parish priest of Crockett Island. This man is so charismatic and attractive that he tempted us to ignore the mysteries around him to let him guide us to “salvation.” We recommend that you read our in-depth thematic analysis of the series and they will understand why he is one of the best series characters of 2021.
Roy Kent (Ted Lasso)
A football player, former Champions League champion, who is at the end of his career became our favorite in a series full of charismatic and very well written characters. All thanks to a captivating personality who, behind a stoic and aggressive attitude, hides a deeply emotional man who loves his niece, his girlfriend and football with all his heart. The contrast of their personalities and their fantastic tone of voice was the cause of some of the funniest and most emotional moments of the first two seasons.
Yelena Belova (Black Widow / Hawkeye)
The loss of Natasha in the Marvel Cinematic Universe still hurts us. Her sister is not going to replace her in our hearts, but she easily earned her own place. Florence Pugh is fantastic at everything she does and this is no exception, making Yelena one of the best movie characters of 2021. We loved watching her fight alongside her family in Black Widow and it was one of the best elements of the series Hawkeye, in which he demonstrated excellent chemistry with Kate Bishop. We hope to see you again together in the future.
Travis Touchdown (No More Heroes 3)
The «otaku murderer» returns to Santa Destroy after a few years of exile and self-criticism seen in Travis Strike Again: No More Heroes. The result is a clear evolution in her personality, which now – maintaining its characteristic humor – is more “mature” and focused on her decisions. Travis no longer seeks to satisfy himself, he now fights for his loved ones and more than a murderer he is now aware that he can be a superhero. The above, along with the extravagant events of the last game in the franchise NMH, create the perfect setting for Travis. Here is our review of this title.
King Shark (The Suicide Squad)
James Gunn’s movie is filled with fantastic characters, from our ever-adored Harley Quinn to the ironically violent Peacemaker. But if one of them won our hearts it was this version of Nanaue, whose puppy dog eyes contrast enormously with the violence with which she destroys her enemies. His attempts to demonstrate intelligence and the way in which he connected with the rest of the team made us laugh and touch. Our favorite version of the character is still from the animated series of Harley Quinn, but this is a close second. Here is our review of this movie.
Jinx (Arcane: A League of Legends Story)
She was a pretty funny character in Riot Games’ popular MOBA, but we never imagined that “the Harley Quinn from LoLIt could harbor such a tragic background. Powder’s transformation into Jinx and her relationship with her sister Vi had us glued to the screen with an intensity worthy of the best dramas. We can’t wait for the second season. Luisa Madrigal (Charm)
The latest Disney movie, which has a story set in Colombia, is full of colorful and fun characters. Although the protagonist Mirabel is absolutely fantastic, we fell more in love with her sister Luisa. She is the muscle of the Madrigals and has a fantastic design, but it was their song ‘In the deep’ which raised it to another level. The suffering that he has endured for years in silence and the metaphorical “weight” that he must carry for the good of the family is something that many of us can identify with. Peter ‘Star-Lord’ Quill (Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy)
To our surprise we find in this version of Peter Quill or Star-Lord with one of the best video game characters of 2021. This is a man who is working hard to be responsible and become the leader that his team deserves. The way her relationship with the other Guardians evolves — especially Rocket — and little Nicky touched our hearts. Also, the game does a very good job of making us feel the weight of its decisions. As if that were not enough, his dialogues are very funny. Here’s our review of this amazing title.
There are others that were just outside of our list of the best characters in movies, video games, series and ‘anime’ of 2021. We can not stay without making a mention of Gabi Braun, from Shingeki no Kyojin, which taught us the complexities of watching a war from both sides. Agata Harkness ‘enchanted’ us with her deceptions in WandaVision and Seong Gi-Hun made us feel the weight of capitalism in The Squid Game. Although they belong to re-releases, we cannot fail to mention the fantastic Kainé from NieR Replicant and the terrifying Monica from Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!.
