A patent from the Cupertino company reveals how this technological innovation would work.
We have talked about the virtues of reverse wireless charging many times. In fact, a little over a year ago, we found out that the iPhone 12 line already supports reverse wireless charging. This feature allows devices – usually smartphones – to receive and charge the battery of other devices from behind.
But what if the wireless charging does the reverse happen on the screen? Well, that might be possible with future iPhone and iPad models, according to a new patent from Apple.
The idea of charging a terminal using power from another device seemed to work the same way, you would place a smartphone face down on a table and put another device on it to charge it.
However, it is a bit odd (personally) to place a smartphone screen on the table or any other surface. It seemed to be something unnatural. But … will it be more normal to place a device above a screen to recharge its battery or will it always be “weird”? Let’s see what Apple’s new patent has to tell us!
This is Apple’s new patent that would allow an iPad to charge the battery of another device via its screen.
At the end of 2021, Apple presented a new patent in which it showed a MagSafe case capable of charging AirPods. Now, the Cupertino company has returned to the fray with a new patent which it proposes to apply. place a device on the iPhone or iPad to charge its battery.
Apple’s new patent filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office under number 20210408826 is titled “Wireless Charging Through Display.”
Its name says it all, the patent speaks of a technology capable of charging the battery of one device through the screen of another device.
“An electronic device (eg a tablet) can be configured to wirelessly charge an accessory (eg a stylus) via the front display of the device.”
The general description of the patent seems to suggest that IPhone and iPad can charge Apple Pencil battery. A system that would make a lot of sense, considering that many iPad users unconsciously leave their Apple Pencil on the iPad screen when not in use.
Currently Apple offers a fairly practical solution which consists in anchoring the Apple Pencil on the flat edges of the iPad Pro in order to recharge its battery wirelessly. Of course, as long as it’s a second generation Apple Pencil. Otherwise, you need to connect it through the Lightning connector.
The patent is described in very complex language but is accompanied by illustrations that clarify how this wireless charging system works that Apple might consider working on.
The illustrations show us a hybrid screen with a section that could allow wireless charging
Taking into account that over the past few years, the company’s bitten-apple trend has been to gradually reduce the side bezels, not only of its iPad, but also of its iPhone … Apple is unlikely to expand frames again your electronic devices for the sole purpose of being able to recharge the Apple Pencil battery from the front glass of your iPhone or iPad.
However, citing the patent, the screen bezels of an iPad might have magnets to anchor the Apple Pencil in a space of about 1 centimeter, which the frames of iPad Pro models measure.
A wireless charging assembly configured to charge an accessory in a personal electronic device, wherein the wireless charging assembly would comprise: a core configured to be disposed under the display of a personal electronic device; one or two windings disposed in the core and configured to generate magnetic flux below the front screen, wirelessly supplying power to an accessory when that accessory is placed at a predetermined location on the screen.
The patent was developed by eight inventors, including, as Apple Insider reported, Zaki Moussaoui, an Apple employee previously tied to another wireless charging patent with CarKey chargers. As we usually indicate in this type of article, the appearance on the scene of the filing of this patent does not necessarily mean that Apple will develop this technology, but that they simply present the idea of developing it or not. in the future. .
For now, it looks like iPad users will have to wait for the company with the bitten apple logo to launch this interesting initiative to charge the devices’ battery. Apple Pencil, AirPods and other accessories via the iPad screen. But Apple already offers more than interesting alternative solutions to recharge the battery of its products using wireless charging technology.
First of all, AirPods have offered wireless charging for years thanks to their charging case. On the other hand, Apple has also incorporated wireless charging into its last four generations of smartphones. Additionally, the company launched a MagSafe battery capable of charging the iPhone battery by attaching to its back.
