Since its original release in December 2015, Rainbow Six Siege has continued to attract a large number of players. While players seem drawn to the game’s tense tactical gameplay, the other part of this equation is the consistent updates, both with fixes and new content to keep the experience fresh. Every now and then Siege also gets limited time modes like Outbreak, which became a huge hit with gamers when it arrived a couple of years ago.
The mode changed the rules of the game, pitting three players against waves of infected enemies with different objectives. Outbreak was so popular that Ubisoft developed a spin-off game now known as Rainbow Six Extraction, taking those elements and expanding them. Extraction brings 18 of Seige’s operators along with 12 maps that feature ever-evolving objectives that are more rewarding the more players get. The latest trailer also sheds light on the lore and history of the game.
Narrated by Dr. Elena “Mira” Alvarez, the Director of Rainbow’s newly created REACT division, Rainbow Six Extraction appears to pick up after the events that took place in New Mexico during the event of the outbreak. With the threat re-emerging, highlighted by the removal of the Statue of Liberty, REACT is a unit dedicated to researching, developing, and eliminating the evolving archaic threat. However, as the trailer continues, things seem to be evolving faster than REACT can keep up.
The trailer also shows new gameplay, including the description of Sprawl, a strange substance that covers floors and walls, allowing enemies to move faster. These enemies include multiple variants and evolutions like Lurker, who can cover up and take players by surprise. However, the biggest surprise was saved for last, detailing what happens when enemies take a player character hostage. While they can be saved, it appears that the dark versions of these characters can make appearances as evidenced by an alien copy of Sledge using an electrified version of his hammer.
Fans got some good news earlier this week, especially those who are active Game Pass subscribers. Rainbow Six Extraction is coming to Xbox and PC Game Pass on day one, which should certainly appeal to those who may have been hesitant to give it a try. With such a heavy focus on cooperative multiplayer, Ubisoft hopes this will increase the number of players who are then retained as the company releases its free post-launch content like Maelstrom Protocol, Crisis Events, and more.
Rainbow Six Extraction will be released for Amazon Luna, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X / S on January 20, 2022.
