The South Korean government has forced Apple to allow alternative payment methods in the App Store.
A new direct report from the Korea Herald announces that Apple is about to make a move never seen before. As they comment, company plans to authorize alternative payment systems in apps in South Korea. The news comes after a new law in the country banned app store operators from requiring third-party app developers to use their own integrated payment systems.
For its part, those in Cupertino have not announced when this new rule will take effect. What we do know, however, is that the company will charge developers a small fee for using payment systems outside of the App Store, based on plans presented to the Korea Communications Commission.
This is a special occasion because Apple has been quite reluctant on many occasions to open its App Store to other payment systems within the applications. In fact, it was one of the triggers of the big lawsuit between Apple and Epic Games some time ago.

Apple for its part assured that “We look forward to working with the KCC and our developer community on a solution that benefits our Korean users.“, through a statement to the Korea Herald. Moreover, those of Cupertino assure that “Apple highly respects the laws of Korea and has a long history of working with the country’s talented app developers. Our work will always be guided by keeping the App Store as a safe and trustworthy place for our users to download the apps they love.“.
However, those in Cupertino aren’t the only ones needing to include new payment options in their stores. Google, for its part, announced that it would allow its developers to use alternative payment methods. within apps, and this will also reduce the commission required for developers to use alternative payment methods to the Play Store. In the case of those in Mountain View, the commission would drop from 15% to 11%.
