Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle was a very solid game when it was released back in 2017 and it also became the best-selling third party game on the Nintendo Switch family of systems. This year will see the sequel released, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, and all eyes will be upon it. BAFTA-nominated composer Grant Kirkhope will once again be at the helm and has spoken briefly in a recent interview
What Grant is looking to achieve with Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope
Just as with the first game, the team is facing the challenge of making a game both reverent of the past and eager to explore new ideas.
“Davide is very keen for it to be both,” Kirkhope said. “He’s pushing me and everybody on the team to try and do something different.”
“Musically, I’m trying something that’s different to Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, and it’s a slightly slow process because [Davide] keeps going, ‘no, no, I want it to be new!’ You know, it’s always hard to try your best, to try and reinvent yourself, and I’m trying at the moment to do that.”
“I feel like I’m a better orchestral composer than I was on Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. And I feel like I’m getting better. You’ll have to let me know when you hear it, right?”
The Mario + Rabbids team relationship
“The relationship with Romain Brillaud and Davide is brilliant,” Kirkhope said. “I feel like those two guys are my friends, we’re friends. I’m sure we could fight at some point, but I feel like we’d be friends forever.”
“That’s when you make great stuff, right? When you’ve got great relationships with people. You get along, you can tell each other when it’s crap, that kind of thing.”
