A new open letter by Angela Hession, vice president of global trust and security at Twitch, describes the company’s approach to making its streaming platform a more harmonious place, specifically deleting millions of bots to curb those of the site Hate raid epidemic.
“Over the past 12 months, we’ve rolled out some of the most powerful tools yet to keep Twitch as safe as possible for as many people as possible,” Hession writes. “We have also introduced several landmark policies that help protect the community from new and evolving threats of all types.
“At the same time, however, our community experienced some of the most vicious attacks on streamers ever,” continues Hession, “particularly streamers of color, LGBTQIA+ community members, and military veterans. This type of behavior has no place on Twitch and we know there is more we can do to protect our community.”
The absurdity of putting Resistance to military recruitment Aside from the ongoing harassment of black and queer people, Hession goes on to detail some of the steps Twitch has taken toward those goals. The biggest involve the removal of more than 15 million bots used to spread toxic messages in stream chats and chats sue those responsible for hate attacks. Twitch expects that number to increase despite implementation Chat privileges with verified phone number and new tools to detect suspicious users.
Hession’s letter also reaffirms Twitch’s commitment to enforcing the Off-Service Misconduct Policy the site was launched last April. If applied correctly, this should keep those responsible for the most heinous crimes (death threats, child exploitation, etc.) off Twitch and potentially protect users from having this type of abuse following them to and from other social media platforms.
Plans for 2022 include improvements to the user reporting and complaints process, updates to how streamers can use suspicious user information, and more.
“As I mentioned earlier, security isn’t an end state,” adds Hession. “There’s so much more to come. We will continue to listen and collect your feedback, introduce new policies and products, and provide regular updates on our progress.”
