Samsung Q85R 65 inch: Zocktaugliche Monsterglotze

Samsung TVs are welcome in any Zockerbude. The Q85 is no exception thanks to a whole range of game-optimized features such as gaming mode and FreeSync, making it especially interesting for console players. But the Brummer has a lot more up its sleeve – a participant of our Gamesworld-Reader-Awards will soon be able to convince himself, because there we will draw a copy. Meanwhile, we grabbed the 65-inch variant and tested it for practicality.

The Samsung Q85R RGTXZG is currently priced in a category that presumably not everyone voluntarily hangs on the wall. After all, the 65-inch model in the series is currently on the lists at € 2,279, but we were able to spot it in the retail sector for € 1,900 to 2,000. With the rapid drop in prices in the TV sector, however, it should be affordable for a broader mass by the autumn of next fall.

The Q85R in the 65-inch version is of course a decent Brummer. You are well advised to have a helping hand to set up when setting it up, especially since the beast also brings something on the scales. However, it is pleasing that the cleverly designed base with 327.9 mm requires relatively little space in the depth and therefore fits on many racks and cabinets. Wall hanging is of course also an option. With a VESA 400×300 wall suspension, it even hugs a load-bearing wall almost without any gaps.

How and where: 1449.5 x 917.9 x 327.9 mm space must be available, otherwise there is nothing. Chic is the way the extremely narrow frame around the panel. The other processing is as high quality, as one may expect in a device of this price range. It should be noted that all connections are not made directly on the TV. Samsung once again relies on the external One Connect Box, which is only connected to the telly via a narrow cable with appropriate cable routing on the back. The power connection is located on the external box. At the same time this ensures that the Q85R is relatively slim.

The external One Connect Box is well stocked and delivers basically everything you could want at ports. 4x HDMI (including ARC / CEC), 3x USB, 1x LAN, plus an optical output for connecting a soundbar, for example, plus BlueTooth connectivity. Of course, there are also connections for antenna and satellite dish. You have to calculate space for the One Connect box, of course, with 39 x 7 x 14.5 cm (calculated without cables), it is already a chunk, but a cookie should be safe to find, especially since they are not necessarily in thanks to five meters of cable near the TV. On older options such as AUX connection or headphone jack Samsung has meanwhile omitted.

There are no controls. The operation is done by the bank by means of a slim remote control, which is limited to the most necessary buttons and leaves everything else to the user interface Samsung Smart Hub. Of course, there are, of course, channel selection and volume, the menu functions and the button for the still somewhat bumpy Bixby voice control. But there are also hotkeys for the streaming services Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Rakuten TV so you do not have to search these apps first in the menus. Apart from that, the Q85R is also compatible with SmartThings, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and AirPlay 2. Again, nothing to complain about.

The Samsung Smart Hub works well and fast, the clarity is fine. Impressive are the myriad of settings, if you want to deal with such details apart from the already good basic settings like. Very fine: if you want, the Q85R switches depending on the input source in a suitable mode. For example, if you launch a game on the Xbox One X, the TV goes straight into gaming mode with HDR, FreeSync, and optimized latency and fast response time.
