Developer Playtonic is made up of veterans from the golden days of platformers who worked on games for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The founders were active at Rare back then, creating, among other things, Battletoads and Donkey Kong Country.
And you can feel those roots in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. In a colorful 2.5D world that shows certain similarities to Donkey Kong Country, you have to prove your jumping skills. You go on the journey as Yooka and Laylee, playing a dynamic duo of chameleon and bat. This tandem principle is also reminiscent of Donkey and Diddy Kong. However, Yooka-Laylee is a pure single-player title.

On top of that, there’s literally a 3D overworld that you explore from a bird’s eye view to uncover all sorts of secrets. Overall, the presentation is very playful, colorful and light-hearted.
Is it fun?
on Metacritic Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair achieves a good average of 81 points from 13 press reviews. However, a total of 64 users only rated it with 6.2 out of 10 points. on Steam on the other hand, the game is very well received by customers: 90 percent of 457 reviewers give a positive vote.
Suitable for whom?
Yooka-Laylee is great for a nostalgic emotional journey into the long-gone Jump & Run era. Anyone who loved Donkey Kong as a child will certainly quickly feel at home in the platformer.
You really have to be in the mood for Yooka-Laylee 2’s cute, colorful style, though. But even if that doesn’t usually meet your taste, it might be worth a little variety to do a virtual change of scenery.
