Black Dynamite

Michael Jai White is one of the great underrated actors of our time and his blaxploitation parody Black Dynamite is one of the funniest movies of the century. White stars in the film as Black Dynamite, a former CIA agent whose quest to avenge his brother’s death takes him to the Nixon White House. White also co-wrote the hilariously snappy screenplay, which is filled with both goofy gags and cultural commentary. —peter people

Colonel Senf looks at Frau. white, feel the flames burn on the side of her face, burn

It’s not often that a board game-inspired film becomes a cult classic, but that’s exactly what happened when Jonathan Lynn took over directing notice, the dark 1985 mystery comedy starring Colleen Camp, Tim Curry, Michael McKean and Madeline Kahn. Co-written by John Landis (The Blues Brothers, An American werewolf in London) Lynn’s adaptation is as hilarious as it is subversively innovative, with three different endings shown separately during the first theatrical run, with audiences arguing about the ‘true’ ending in a Rashomon-similar viewing experience. While later home releases of the film feature all three alternate endings, notice remains as sharp and funny from a crime spoof as it was on the day it premiered. – Toussaint Egan

The Exorcist

Lankester Merrin stands in front of the MacNeil house in The Exorcist.

Image: Warner Home Video

An all-time classic for good reason, The Exorcist is just as chilling now as it was when it caused a mild nationwide panic when it was released in 1973. When a young girl (Linda Blair) starts acting very strange, her mother will try anything and everything to get her help, resulting in…well, you know the title of the movie. The realism of a mother’s desire to protect her daughter from a supernatural conflict in an uncontrollable world draws you in from the start and keeps you hooked well beyond the end of the two-hour running time. —PV

The Exorcist is available for streaming Netflix.

The fly

Jeff Goldbum as Seth Brundle in The Fly.

Image: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

Jeff Goldblum stars in David Cronenberg’s 1986 sci-fi horror drama The fly as Seth Brundle, a brilliant and ambitious scientist who undergoes a metamorphosis that would freeze Gregor Samsa to the bone. The fly is a tragic scientific rampage tale that is as macabre as it is heartbreaking, enhanced by Cronenberg’s characteristic penchant for body horror special effects, violence and explicit sensuality. -AT THE

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Image: MGM Home Entertainment

Don Siegel’s classic sci-fi film noir tale of a California town whose residents are slowly being taken over by emotionless copies of themselves has been remade many times (including the equally excellent 1978 version, starring Donald Sutherland), but few have quite the suspense and the emotional heart of the creepy original. A local doctor (Kevin McCarthy) and his ex-girlfriend (Dana Wynter) are among the first to suspect what’s happening, but it’s difficult to convince others of the madness that’s going on (or to know who they are). can trust). At a crisp 80 minutes you’ll have a blast, but beware the pod people! — PV

The Last Winter

Larry Fessenden’s haunting tale of environmental degradation in the Arctic is a masterpiece of modern horror. An environmental scientist (James LeGros) is dispatched to the Arctic to oversee an oil well before natural and supernatural conflict complicates things. Dealing both explicitly and allegorically with global warming and the dangers of human “exploration”, The Last Winter features a great cast, led by Ron Perlman and Connie Britton, and a masterful use of horror aesthetics to build suspense and intrigue. — PV

The Mighty Quinn

Denzel Washington and James Fox in The Mighty Quinn.

Image: MGM Home Entertainment

Before Denzel Washington was one of our all-time great movie stars, he brought all-time great movie star energy to otherwise disposable thrillers. The Mighty Quinnbased on AHZ Carr’s pulp novel from 1971 Find Maubeebut with a title copied from a Bob Dylan song, would not be a highly recommended crime novel without the now two-time Oscar winner – despite a screenplay by Bladerunner Writer Hampton Fancher, the detective work is pretty boring. But Washington flexes its muscles as Xavier Quinn, the police chief of a fictional Caribbean island, investigates his best friend Maubee (Robert Townsend) after a multi-million dollar resort owner is found dead. On the trail of the killer, Quinn interrogates witnesses, races home to pick up his child, overtakes a seductive femme fatale, tries to mend a broken relationship with his estranged wife, and dodges enough bullets to earn the title “Powerful.” earn. Which leads to Washington mixing brawn with charm, smug authority with exaggerated fear and a calculating grasp of the island’s dynamism. Supported by Michael Rose Reggae, The Mighty Quinn is a fast-paced 90-minute crime thriller with a 1970s crime twang that replaces beauty with an equally mesmerizing on-screen presence. For some of us, this is the ideal vacation. —Matte patches

The Mighty Quinn is available for streaming HBO Max.

The one

Jet Li takes on Jet Li in The One.

Image: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

Multiverse movies are all the rage right now, so why not catch up on a classic? Jet Li plays a sinister universal assassin whose sole goal is to kill every other version of himself throughout the multiverse and leave him as “The One”. With each version of himself he kills, he grows stronger, gaining superhuman strength, speed, and intelligence. Jet Li also plays Gabriel Yulaw, the last remaining alter ego who can kill his evil self, and Delroy Lindo (!) and Jason Statham (with an American accent!!!) play co-stars as Multiverse cops who are sent to to track him Down. Come for Jet Li, who kicks people out of the air like soccer balls, stay for the wild early 2000s nu metal soundtrack. —PV

The one is available for streaming Netflix and Hi.

warrior

Tom Hardy as Tommy Conlon in Warrior.

Image: Lionsgate Home Entertainment

Quality sports drama is a rarity in Hollywood. In warrior, two estranged brothers – one a former Marine and former wrestling prodigy (Tom Hardy), the other a former MMA pro turned high school physics teacher (Joel Edgerton) – compete in a massive MMA tournament with more at stake than just the big cash prize. Gavin O’Connor’s candid sibling story destined to clash features great central performances, great MMA fight scenes (Second Unit director JJ Perry is a modern-day action legend), and a strong tournament narrative structure that ties it all together. —PV

Westside Story

The Sharks and the Jets face off on a basketball court in West Side Story.

Image: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

Westside Story is a subversive reminder that racial tensions in America are nothing new. But it’s also an upbeat, colorful, tremendously catchy musical that reimagines Romeo and Juliet as a mid-’50s confrontation between a white street gang and a Puerto Rican in New York City. Certainly tougher films have been made about anti-immigrant violence and prejudice, but the fact that all of these things were such a part of American life in the 1960s that they were water for upbeat singalongs is telling. West Side Stories A candid look at racism and the barriers of the American Dream still feels daring today, although some of it is ill-dated, particularly the white actors who don brown faces to play Puerto Rican characters. But its candid admission of the shallowness and destructive power of racism is still touching, and the songs and elaborate dance set pieces still win. — Tasha Robinson
