The Japanese developer PlantinumGames would not reject a takeover if freedom in game development were preserved.
Atsushi Inaba, recently promoted to CEO and President of PlatinumGames, spoke about the numerous acquisitions in the video game industry.
Of course, there was also talk of the mega deal between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard.
When asked about being open to offers, Inaba said freedom in game development is the most important thing. He also doesn’t think Microsoft would restrict Activision Blizzard’s freedoms and control them.
“The most important thing for us is that we have the freedom to make the games we want to make. From what I’ve heard about the recent acquisitions, I don’t think Microsoft is going to start controlling Activision in a way that takes away all their liberties… I don’t think that relationship will happen.”
Should one receive an offer that would still respect PlatinumGames’ freedom, he would not refuse a takeover.
“I think there’s going to be a lot of mutual respect and I think Activision will continue to be able to do what they do best. That’s also what matters most to us at the end of the day, whatever form that takes for us and our company. So I would not oppose anything as long as our freedom continues to be respected.”
Mergers are not common at all in Japan, Inaba notes. He finds it strange that this doesn’t happen more often.
“I agree that you don’t see that very often in Japan, and personally I find it strange. “Sometimes with some of these big companies with all their money you’re like, ‘Come on! Buy some companies already!’ It’s strange that Japanese companies are passive all the time.
