The two-year anniversary of The Last of Us 2’s release is approaching and many people are still digesting everything that happened in the work of Naughty Dog. Ellie’s adventure became a traumatic journey for the protagonist, moved by the thirst for revenge and leaving aside all her scruples.
ATTENTION SPOILERS: From here we are going to deal directly with the plot of The Last of Us 2, so if you haven’t played it yet, heed the warning.
If you remember, the first bars of the game openly show us the Joel’s brutal death at the hands of Abby, the other great protagonist of the title. Abby wanted to avenge Joel’s murder of her father in the original The Last of Us, and Ellie watches the scene helplessly but beg for Abby to stop the slaughter.
One of the fiercest criticisms it has received The Last of Us 2 it is the incongruity of the scene with respect to Joel’s personality. Both he and his brother Tommy arrive at a house occupied by Abby’s group and start chatting with them in a relaxed way until They are attacked by surprise.
For many, it is not understandable that Joel is so affable from the start, so they argue that making him lower his defenses against strangers was a resource by director Neil Druckmann to justify his death. Now his own Druckmann has explained why it does make sense that the event unfolds the way it does.
1) If Joel didn’t go to the lodge he and Tommy would’ve died by the horde.
2) Re: trust – remember that stranger in the first game that Joel trusted and even fell asleep next to? Here’s a clue: he later left Joel and Ellie to die in order to protect his baby brother. https://t.co/YVKKP6SS9Ypic.twitter.com/H2gQUtvhFM— Neil Druckmann (@Neil_Druckmann) February 19, 2022
If Joel hadn’t gone to the shelter, he and Tommy would have died at the hands of the horde.
As for trust, remember the stranger from the first game where Joel trusted and even fell asleep next to him? Here’s a hint: he later let Joel and Ellie die to protect little brother from him.
Responding to a user who complains about how Joel behaves, Druckmann clarifies that Joel and Tommy had no choice but to get into the shelter
On the other hand, to knock down the belief that Joel didn’t trust anyone at the 2013 game, Druckmann refers to Sam and Henry, the two brothers Joel and Ellie meet in Pittsburgh. Although mistrust reigns between them, the two couples end up resting together and then try to flee the city. However, Henry decides to betray them at the most critical moment. and leaves them to their fate.
Either way, the story of The Last of Us 2 it is what it is and Naughty Dog is focused on several projects at once. A multiplayer title is underway and the latest information points to a remake of the first The Last of Us.
