Gaming News Guardians of the Galaxy: Square Enix still disappoints with a Marvel license

With the MCU’s success in cinemas, we all thought that the Marvel franchise was inevitably synonymous with success… We have to think we were wrong. Since Square Enix secured a partnership with the American giant, the Japanese publisher has endured a series of disappointments.

After Marvel’s Avengers, it’s Guardians of the Galaxy’s turn to disappoint

Square Enix had gold on its hands, and yet the publisher managed to miss the September 2020 launch of Marvel’s Avengers by offering a title that didn’t live up to press and player expectations. Square Enix also seemed to agree with the feedback, as shortly after the launch of Guardians of the Galaxy the publisher even stated that Crystal Dynamics was not the right choice to forge a gaming service:

The adoption of the Game-as-a-Service model has highlighted issues that we are likely to face in our future game development projects, such as: B. The need to select game designs that fit the unique skills and preferences of our studios and development teams.

We imagined at the time that due to its mistakes, the studio had revised its strategy of taking over as many households as possible of Guardians of the Galaxy, their new creation, but in the end it’s not. Even though the game, developed by Eidos Montreal, captured the press and almost all players who had the experience tried it, the title didn’t sell well enough.

In fact, Square Enix just released theirs balance sheet the second half of 2021 and in the latter admitted that all is not well for Star-Lord’s band. If Final Fantasy VII Remake has high marks, Guardians of the Galaxy doesn’t, as evidenced by the Japanese publisher’s feedback.

Despite rave reviews, the game’s launch sales were lower than we expected.

One can only hope that the video game adventures of Star-Lord and his friends manage to reach a wider audience in the long term. As a reminder, on our part, we particularly liked the adventure game, giving it a score of 16/20.
