Bring the Armored Titan Operator Skin to Call of Duty
To mark the occasion of the arrival of the Armored Titan Operator skin in Call of Duty, I caught up with Jason Babler, Associate Art Director of Live Operations at Sledgehammer Games.
Noel: What was the feeling at Sledgehammer Games when you first found out that you were going to bring the likeness of the Armored Titan to Call of Duty?
Babbling: I will speak for the entire team in saying that we were both honored and thrilled to bring Kodansha’s Attack on Titan to Call of Duty. There’s a huge following of Attack on Titan fans here at Sledgehammer Games, and it was pretty unanimous that the Armored Titan should be in our game.
What was the process of integrating Attack on Titan into Call of Duty? Could you share any memorable moments?
Bringing Attack on Titan to Call of Duty was a collaborative effort involving Sledgehammer Games. We spent a lot of time exploring ideas for images that would make sense as emblems, stickers, and other 2D artwork, as there were a ton of amazing anime fan-favorite images among which ones to choose. However, the choice of the Armored Titan happened very quickly, which speaks to the strength of his character design. Our character team felt they could bring those visual cues and create a human-sized operator within Call of Duty.
I remember when I first saw the 3D model of the Armored Titan and then later the ultra rare Titan themed gun we created – that surge of excitement seeing this really resonated with our whole team and it happened several times on this project. We know the fans will feel it too.
This Operator skin is unlike any we’ve ever seen in Call of Duty. How did you feel about being able to bring a monster to life as a bestial outfit for the first time in Call of Duty?
I’ve used the word honored before and it’s always the first word that comes to mind. Having worked in the anime industry before, I understand the love artists and studios put into their characters. In this case, we were trusted to bring these beloved Attack on Titan characters to our world in partnership with Funimation, and we wanted to do them justice. Every person on this project carried that feeling through the process.
Players have always been drawn to creating their own identity with blueprints, skins, finishers, and all the player accessories we offer. Having the Armored Titan skin in our game is a natural fit. I guarantee that fans of the anime will not be disappointed.
What is/are your favorite moment(s) [alternate: Titan-related moment] from the anime Attack on Titan?
I have a few: seeing the various Titans introduced throughout the series has never gotten old, and also seeing the ODM in action for the first time
