this disturbing series may be one of the crown jewels of Apple TV+ this year

Apple, crown, Disturbing, Jewels, series, Year

Imagine that you start working in a leading company in the sector. A huge international conglomerate that offers you a good salary and even places you in a good quality rental house covered with services to increase your well-being. The thing? You agree to undergo surgery that will completely separate the memories of your personal life and those of your work.

Simply put, your professional self will have no idea who you are outside of the office, and your personal self will have no idea what you’re working on. You might know someone in your personal life and it might be your lifelong co-worker. And neither you nor that person knows. When your personal work leaves the office, it suddenly finds itself coming back into it the next day, and when your personal self enters the office, it suddenly finds itself walking out of it in the blink of an eye. Secrecy and confidentiality pushed to the extreme.

A dystopia with the air of criticism of big business

What you have just read is the premise of ‘Separation‘, a new series on Apple TV+ from the mind of Dan Erickson and directed by actor Ben Stiller; and of which we already see the first three chapters. We are facing a type of series that had never set foot on this streaming service.

Each chapter reveals a very organized and pleasant, but disturbing environment. It sets up a scenario for you where everything is seemingly ideal, but something bad is happening behind the curtain. And that’s what the protagonist, one of the workers with a “separate” mind, will have to find out with the help of someone who has been through this situation and managed to escape.

What we’ve seen from ‘Separation’ so far reminiscent of an episode of black mirrorbut with an air of the 80s given the technology retro who appears in the series. This is combined with an environment appropriate soundtrack and you get a series that hooks you from the first moment. You want to know what’s going on, what’s behind this business that apparently works so well.

All in all, “Separation” is a very interesting addition to the Apple TV+ catalog that adds a new genre to the catalog. It can also be seen as a dystopian critique of how far big business can go these days, but it’s mostly a well-crafted atmospheric mystery. I will continue to watch this series until the end of the season, because it promises.
