the big novelty of the Apple event yesterday afternoon was undoubtedly the mac studio and its corresponding monitor Studio display. A powerful screen, to which you can connect an iPad with a USB-C connection. But unfortunately, it is not compatible with all iPads that have this port.
Of all the iPads that already have the USB-C connector, only three of them are compatible with the new Studio Display. Simply for the Baud rate of data that the iPad can support.
Yesterday, some new devices were presented during the event “Peer performance” from Apple. And until they begin to reach users who have already requested it, we must limit ourselves to reading the features that Apple tells us, no more and no less.
And one of these features of the Studio Display monitor refers to iPads compatible with said screen, and which can be connected via a cable USB-C. It turns out that not all iPads with such a connection will be able to use the Studio Display.
According to the company, the new 27-inch 5K Studio display is compatible with a range of Macs dating back to the 2016 MacBook Pro models, but its compatibility with iPads is notably limited to the 11-inch iPad ProAl 12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd generation and up) and the new iPad Air 5th Generation.
This excludes certain iPad models with a USB-C connection, such as the fourth-generation iPad Air and the latest iPad mini. The problem is that these models, even with a USB-C connection, do not reach the necessary data transmission speed in said port.
baud rate problem
iPad Pro models that support Studio Display have a USB-C port with performance of 10 Gbps (also known as USB 2.1 Gen 2), while the iPad Air and fourth-generation iPad mini 6 include a USB 3.1 Gen 1 USB-C connection from 5 Gbps. This connectivity standard supports a single external display with up to 4K resolution at 30Hz. Therein lies the problem.
The new iPad Air, on the other hand, uses a USB 3.1 Gen 2 connector, which doubles its data rate over the model it replaces, matching USB 2.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) on iPad models. iPad Pro compatible. Therefore, these devices can support connection to a Studio Display.
