Will there soon be a cheaper Netflix subscription with advertising? At a major tech conference, the streaming service didn’t categorically rule this out, at least. More on web world.
- US streaming services such as Disney+, Hulu and HBO Max rely on cheaper subscriptions with advertising.
- Netflix also does not want to rule this out for the future, at least.
- “We have no religion against advertising,” said a senior Netflix executive.
Will Netflix have ads soon? Just a few days ago, the news circulated that Netflix competitor Disney+ will be offering a cheaper international subscription model from 2023, which will be financed by advertising. The high-ranking Netflix manager Spencer Neumann spoke at least once not clearly against such a concept for the Californian streaming service.
At a tech and media conference in San Francisco, when asked about possible advertising plans by Netflix, Neumann said verbatim: “Never say Never.”
While Netflix doesn’t currently have any plans in that direction, Neumann explained, “It’s not like we have a religion against advertising, just to be clear.”
Ad-financed subscription models help streamers tremendously to grow
The Disney+ streaming service wants to beat top dog Netflix with its new advertising model. Up to 260 million subscribers should be reached worldwide by 2024. The mouse streaming service currently has almost 130 million paying customers.
Netflix currently has almost 222 million subscribers. But the stock market price has suffered recently – and Netflix is not expecting any gigantic growth in the current first quarter of 2022 either. An ad-supported version could prove to be quite helpful. Incidentally, Spencer Neumann, who is responsible for Netflix, is counting on this in the medium and long term half a billion Netflix subscribers across the planet.
In the USA, other streaming services such as Hulu, Peacock, Paramount+ and HBO Max also rely on advertising-financed subscription models.
