While the release of the long-awaited series dedicated to the universe of The Lord of the Rings is long overdue, two members of the team working on The Rings of Power arrive to formalize important information about the content of this Amazon-initiated program.
What does the first trailer say
If the elements of the first trailer we dissected seemed to show that the series would stand out from the universe of the film trilogies, nothing had been formalized until now. A recent interview with Vanity Fair magazine by showrunners Patrick McKay and JD Payne provided important clarification on the world envisioned for the Amazon Prime Video series.
A legal question
Patrick McKay and JD Payne have therefore stated that The Rings of Power are part of a very different universe than the films and in accordance with the rights acquired by Amazon. In fact, if Amazon has the rights to JRR Tolkien’s books, it’s Warner and New Line who technically own the ones allowing the adaptations. Also, Amazon has some leeway – but also an obligation – to separate the various stories that make up its series from those of the six films.
