The SELL has just published Industry key figures for the past year. And the least we can say and that the tricolor market is doing well. In fact, the industry generated 5.6 billion dollars, a record. In the last two years, the increase is 13.5%. Although there is of course a slowdown from the 2020 vintage, driven by an unexpected momentum, the performance is nonetheless strong. What explains those numbers is hardware sales, which are up 22%. With one year of operation for the latest generation of consoles, the Xbox Series X|S and PS5, their growth amounts to 17% to almost 800 million dollars.
Despite difficulties in supplying components, this proves that the public is there. One segment has slipped, however, and that’s game sales. In fact, the calendar has been turned upside down with many titles being postponed for this year, with numbers plunging below the $2 billion threshold. Mobile communications recorded a slight decline (-1%). A national peculiarity when it’s the only growing segment worldwide over the year. The explanation can be found in the consumption habits of French players. We would be less inclined to buy more.
