Industry insiders have suspected for some time that Sony is planning a service to compete with Microsoft’s Game Pass. That wouldn’t come as a surprise, after all, the Redmond company’s game subscription service is extremely popular and successful with more than 25 million subscribers.

So far there has been no concrete information about the possible PS service. Now, however, the usually well-informed Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier has commented on the subject. The first concrete information on membership levels and prices are also making the rounds.

But please bear in mind: As long as Sony does not officially comment, are treat all information with caution and do not have to be correct.

Reveal next week?

In his Message Schreier writes that Sony plans to unveil the service as early as next week (March 28 to April 3, 2022). He relies on people who are familiar with the plans of the Japanese group.

What should the service be like? The code name of the new service should Spartacus ring. There is no concrete information on the final name yet.

What should Spartacus offer everything? Jason Schreier describes the new service as a combination of PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now. Users should have access to modern and classic titles.

Prices and membership levels: Already in February 2022, Jeff Grubb commented on Venturebeat on pricing and three different membership plans for PlayStation owners to choose from.

The cheapest level of Spartacus (10 US-Dollar) is intended to be similar in scope to the current Playstation Plus, so you’d get a few titles a month to add to your library. who 13 US-Dollar paid, should also have access to the new game catalog similar to Game Pass. And for 16 US-Dollar would be added demo versions, classic games and the possibility of streaming.

The Last of Us and Co. on the PC?

Especially the last point the streaming, would be interesting for PC gamers. In theory, this would make it possible to play games that were not previously available for home computers, such as The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima or the recently released one Horizon: Forbidden West to be able to play.

But there are also a few question marks on this point: is Sony simply preventing this option for PC gamers? If not, how good would the gaming experience be in terms of image quality and input latency? As you can see, there are many open points that we will probably only get clarity on as soon as Sony officially announces the service.

There have been signs for some time that Sony might want to diversify in the face of competition from Microsoft. Last but not least, this speaks for itself big takeover of Bungiewhich could be lucrative for Sony’s plans, mainly due to their experience with live service games like Destiny 2.
