An anonymous source has alerted Google to a serious security vulnerability in its in-house browser, Google Chrome. It is a problem with the V8 JavaScript engine.
For example, if you visit malicious websites, attackers can inject malicious code into your computer via the browser. As Google itself reports in a blog postthe vulnerability is already being exploited by cybercriminals.
Google rates the vulnerability as “high”. Therefore, the manufacturer has released an emergency update for Windows, Linux and macOS, which you should install immediately.
Chrome usually updates itself automatically. If you want to be on the safe side, you can also perform the update manually.
Chrome plagued by vulnerabilities
In mid-March, the Google Project Zero security analysis team discovered eleven vulnerabilities in Google Chrome. The so-called use-after-free problems would have allowed attackers to damage system-relevant data and crash your computer or smartphone. Unlike the current case, however, Google was able to close the gaps before hackers could take advantage of them.
