Fraud attempts have always gone hand in hand with our means of communication. We have seen attempts by mail, by telephone, by SMS (like the one we recently told you about Banco Santander) and, increasingly, by WhatsApp. The reason is that this app has changed from an app for talking with your friends and family to a global communication app even for dealing with businesses.
And that’s what many scammers use to try to get money that you don’t really want to give them.
Lately we have even seen how messages are being received that supposedly come from official numbers from companies such as Vodafone, but the reality is that it is a scam attempt. How can we identify it?
bad handwriting
This is perhaps the most striking thing about an attempted scam like this. The text we receive is very badly written, with spelling and typographical errors, which a real corporate communication department will not allow.
Whenever you receive such messages, be vigilant and beware.
call you as soon as you can
I always say that it’s rare for someone to call you to give you something, and if that’s what it seems, there’s surely something behind it.
If they offer you a promotion, discount or freebie, the best thing to do is say thank you and say you’ll call the company in question (Vodafone, Orange, any bank…) and that they manage this gift for you.
If they rush you it’s for something
If you do what was mentioned in the previous point, it is possible that they will tell you that it is not possible, that if you do not do it at that time, the discount will be lost. This is a clear sign that it is a scam.
Scams are getting more and more sophisticated
Improved technology allows for more and more advanced robots, but you can still see, if you pay attention, that we don’t talk to anyoneor if this person uses an online translator inaccurately. Both signals indicate a high pass.
As you can see, there are tools we can use to try to avoid this type of scam, although we can never be 100% sure. Not giving out personal data on WhatsApp is always a good way to avoid problems.
