A short hike is an extraordinary game about a bird that goes on a hike through nature. It packs so much exploration into a relatively small package, and pushes itself against the longer quest lists found in larger games. The thought of packing A short hike playing with other players totally goes against the ethos of the game – which is what makes the PC mod A Short Hike 99 so delightfully chaotic.
The idea started as an April Fool’s joke about making the game a “battle royale,” according to developer Adam Robinson-Yu said on Twitter – although the implementation is only intended for “vibing” and not for fighting. According to a tweet in Robinson-Yu’s thread, it’s a “crude mod” that allows you to “see up to 99 other players” while you play.

The unofficial mod is currently available on itch.io. The page describes how to download and install A Short Hike 99 also on Steam via the Betas tab. The mod won’t be a long-term change, but “a fun experiment,” according to the site. And while Robinson-Yu said the server will be up and running for two weeks, the Itch.io page also notes that “you can download and run your own server if you want”.
