Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game, A new tabletop role-playing game designed and published by Steamforged Games isn’t even available in the US yet and is already facing criticism. The Collector’s Edition rulebook was released in Europe and the UK late last month, and players are already finding many bugs — everything from simple spelling mistakes to much larger, more groundbreaking problems. These issues were first reported by cube breaker.
Players on Reddit are pointing out all sorts of major inconsistencies with the ruleset, which is based on an open-source version of Dungeons & Dragons Edition 5. For example, certain classes like the knight don’t have enough Strength at level one to wear their own starting armor, while the caster’s starting stats do not allow him to wield any of his recommended weapons. Now it’s nobody even quite sure how Death is should work.
In a statement to Polygon, developer Steamforged says they don’t think these issues will affect the game’s playability, but that they take the feedback “seriously”:
Our main goal at Steamforged is always to create compelling tabletop experiences that capture the hearts and imaginations of our fans and immerse them in vivid worlds to lose themselves in over and over again. While we feel like we’ve achieved that Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game Given the overwhelmingly positive reviews, we acknowledge the concerns expressed by some and take all feedback seriously. While these concerns shouldn’t affect the game’s playability, we always strive to strengthen our processes to ensure our loyal fans continue to enjoy the games we publish.
While those few copies have been mailed to those who pre-ordered the Collector’s Edition in Europe, the rulebook won’t be released in the United States until May 16th, leaving players with some questions about what might be changed by then.
This isn’t Steamforged Games’ first attempt at bringing a popular video game title to a tabletop audience. The developer has also created successful board games based on Monster Hunter: World, Horizon Zero Dawnand Resident Evil 2. Steamforged is also currently working on a Runescape game, due for release later this year.
