This boss fight, as they often are in FromSoftware games, is about keep your cool and dodge at the last possible second through Godfrey the First Elden Lord’s massive attacks with his axe, without automatically dodging as soon as the boss prepares to hit you.
A big part of this fight is dodging Godfrey’s massive attacks with his axe. The boss usually lands one, two, or three big swings in a row, and it’s important not to get greedy and rush in for an attack, only to get caught by a follow-up attack from the boss.
A very good rule to follow is that if Godfrey the First Elden Lord’s attack ends with his ax on the ground in front of him, he will not chain another strike.
There’s an attack where the boss lays his hammer head down on the ground right in front of him, almost using it like a spear to get at you, and that’s just one example where when the ax ends in front of him on the ground, you have to press the attack.
