Turn off those chainsaws, get ready to leave Earth, and make the grubs furious— gear 5 The developers are getting ready to ditch the last game and move to something completely different.
Microsoft Game Studios developer The Coalition announced It’s removing the Map Builder feature from 2019’s action shooter Gears of War 5 to allow the studio’s staff to “focus on future projects.”
In case you’re not clear, the map generator mode is designed to allow players to create custom levels for the escape mode that comes with the game (it has its own achievements and everything).
But what can the team do? We learned in 2021 that The Coalition is migrating to Unreal Engine 5 for “multiple new projects” in the acclaimed action series.
As series veterans know, Gears has a long history with Unreal Engine – the first Gears of War title was developed by Epic and showed off the engine’s imprint on Xbox 360, whatever comes next (Gears 6 ? Gears Tactics 2? Anything else?) will be the benchmark game for the unproven Unreal 5 engine. We’ve seen the studio show off its experiments with the engine with some pretty impressive face tech demos, and we think more teaser-like material will come out in due course.
Will the next Gears project come out before other Unreal 5 confirmed games, Tomb Raider or The Witcher 4? At this time, who knows.
If you’re after these achievements, don’t worry: any related achievements related to the map generator will now automatically unlock once if you launch the game with the latest update installed. This means that if you open the game from here, you’ll get both “Made by myself” and “Homegrown Hive”.
If you happen to have already achieved these achievements, great! When you open the game, you will be rewarded for your efforts with an exclusive banner or 10k in-game currency, respectively.
At the time of writing, neither Microsoft nor The Coalition have officially announced any new projects, but we do know that one appears to be a new IP.
