The Rainbow Six Siege developers at Ubisoft are thinking about bringing a feature back into the game that the public has been requesting for quite some time.
It’s been a couple of years since Ubisoft removed the nighttime maps from Rainbow Six Siege, and the company has been adamant about denying the possibility of their return. However, it seems that something has changed regarding the company’s take on map variants, and it appears that while players won’t be getting night variants of their favorite Rainbow Six maps back, the developer could be making a big concession.
Ubisoft first removed the nighttime maps from Rainbow Six Siege in 2018, citing concerns about the game for the variants’ release. Before they ended up taking them out of the game entirely, almost every Siege map had a night variant. Players often commented on how a night version gave the landscape a totally different vibe. While they were first phased out in different modes, they were eventually removed with the release of Operation Ember Rise in 2019. However, what some players thought was a permanent change to the game might be undergoing some sort of reversal in focus. Ubisoft.
Earlier this week, Ubisoft made an announcement via its official Rainbow Six Siege Twitter account that nighttime maps might return to the game at some point. The post, titled “a response to night maps,” included a lengthy explanation of the company’s thinking.

Ubisoft went on to say that when making a new night map, it will have to do it in a way that is well lit. The post added that the right amount of lighting is really important, whether it’s night or day maps, because the company wants to make sure that any map they make is fair for all Rainbow Six Siege players. While that message laid out the main topic of the post, Ubisoft also brought some other big news.
The tweet ended by saying that one thing Ubisoft has completely ruled out is adding a night variant to any of the maps found in the current version of Rainbow Six Siege. However, the company gave a little hope to those who had been calling for the return of those variants by saying that it was not “closing the door on future maps”.
The post also included a question from a Redditor that caused the Rainbow Six Siege developers to take to social media to raise the issue in the first place. Beyond that, the company hasn’t offered any further details on when nighttime maps might return.
