Like Microsoft, Sony isn’t done with studio acquisitions to expand the PlayStation Studios family. A new job vacancy underscores the publisher’s acquisition ambitions.

Disgusted at missing out on Square Enix Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, and Western licenses? Sony Interactive Entertainment no longer wants to miss good studio acquisition opportunities to inflate the PlayStation Studios portfolio.

PlayStation acquisitions continue

The Cold War over small acquisitions could intensify in the coming months. Last week we learned that Microsoft was serious about resuming acquisitions. The Redmond company was actively looking for a manager to oversee studio acquisitions. Now it’s Sony’s turn to look for this rare gem.

PlayStation’s parent company is actually looking for a head of development. Long story short, the lucky winner is responsible for studio acquisitions and spotting good buyout and investment opportunities. In other words, he or she needs to expand the PlayStation Studios portfolio to expand YOU in the video game market. An announcement that comes just hours after Embracer Group announced its acquisition of western licenses from Square Enix.

Candidates already in the viewfinder?

According to recent rumours, Sony should indeed be stepping up its ties with Square Enix in order to secure Final Fantasy exclusivities and other powerful licenses from the publisher. However, it appears that Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal have slipped past an unexpected competitor. However, PlayStation Studios should soon welcome a new addition.

Multiple corridor rumors point to a major takeover, more important than Kojima Productions. Other sources also speak of a Japanese studio popular with gamers. Obviously everyone is talking about the name FromSoftware, which recently achieved critical and commercial success with Elden Ring. And if the rumors are true, the announcement of PlayStation’s mysterious acquisition could be as surprising as those of Activision-Blizzard and Bethesda.
