Nintendo Switch Sports brings back the motion-controlled, sporty fun of Nintendo’s turning point video game, Wii sports, for a new generation of gamers. But with the return of tennis and bowling in the living room comes a bane: the ominous specter of smashed TV screens.
Released in 2006, Wii Sports was famous for his ability to turn video game avoiders into hardcore gamers. Many octogenarians got their first taste of a Nintendo game Wii sports, with the simple and intuitive Wii Remote to relive the thrill of bowling in a virtual lane. but Wii sports became infamous for another reason: players wildly whipped their Wii remotes with such force that the controller slipped out of their hands, hitting and sometimes breaking LCD panels, creating unintentional and expensive abstract digital art.
Years later and the Wii still had to evade this reputationdespite its dramatic warning screens chiding players to do so Use the remote control bracelet. Flying Wii Remotes even became joke fodder for Hollywood in 2009 Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.
Just a few days later Nintendo Switch Sports‘Release, the risk of broken TVs and monitors has returned. Over the weekend, there were at least two unconfirmed reports of gamers flying their Joy-Con controllers and claiming the lives of a pair of perfect screens.
on Reddita Nintendo Switch owner named Roman confessed to smashing a TV screen while gaming Nintendo Switch Sports‘ Chambara mode, a sword fight meetsAmerican Gladiators tournament sport.
Roman’s first reaction he saidShe was told to turn off the TV, then turn it on, hoping that would heal that very visible wound – but to no avail, of course.
and on twitch, Streamer 63man showed his viewers what a fast-moving Joy-Con can do with a monitor. The man said he was playing Nintendo Switch Sports “very passionate[ly]’ and threw his controller straight at the screen. “Now my monitor is broken,” 63man said in a YouTube upload of the incident. “It was fun nonetheless […] 10/10.”
Many Nintendo fans saw the new wave of screen crushing coming Nintendo Switch Sports as inevitability. “Here we go again,” Reddit user Mykeprime responded to Roman’s Reddit post about his broken TV. “This is the content I’ve been waiting for,” replied another.
Of course, Nintendo itself anticipated the return of the flying video game controller. The company has installed warnings Nintendo Switch Sports get players to attach the included wristband accessory to their Joy-Cons before playing. But how many Switch owners will bother, or even remember, where those accessories are? Mine, never used, are still in their original plastic bags from the Switch launch in 2017.
How many of these incidents in 2022 will be real, and how many will be Switch owners looking to go viral or gain influence? We must remain skeptical but vigilant when it comes to stories about Joy-Cons wiping out screens. While some true stories may be about folly, we shouldn’t take an irreparably scarred screen at face value.
More importantly, everyone should actually be wearing their wristbands while playing Nintendo Switch Sports. As with seat belts and face masks, it’s better to be safe than sorry. And you can always do that, by the way Order replacement Joy-Con straps direct from Nintendo in case you misplaced yours.
