The title of this post probably sounds Chinese to you if you’re unfamiliar with network routing and processing, but today we’re going to try to not only give you some news, but also get you started. A brief summary what it means to the user that Microsoft has added QoS marking to its Xbox consoles. But if you want a mega summary: fine.
Now on to the mess, the May update brings not only the aforementioned stories for the Xbox app on iOS and Android, but also the implementation of this technology which serves, among other things, to improve the quality of our hours of online game.
Quality of Service (QoS) tagging is a new service for Xbox consoles that sets priority tags on latency-sensitive outgoing network traffic, such as party chat, console streaming, and multiplayer (in supported games). in charge). ). This helps protect your gaming experience from connection issues during times of congestion on supported networks.
What is QoS tagging?
Basically, QoS (Quality of Service) labeling is a system that helps the equipment in question prioritize traffic and ensure minimum bandwidth. Thanks to this, our console can establish a minimum traffic flow for each of the channels that use the networks, for example voice chat.
By default, most devices send all outgoing traffic under the same configuration, but thanks to QoS marking, the console can define what type of traffic should go through each of the channels: VoIP, streaming, multiplayer, etc. In this way, the different networks that converge within our line are not congested and it is ensured that each of the services is performed without interruption.
So, starting with the May update, our Xbox consoles will be able to prioritize certain types of traffic as long as we have a router that is compatible with QoS technology.
Enable QoS and WMM Tagging on Xbox
To activate it, you just need to follow these steps:
- Go to settings.
- Then General.
- Network setup.
- Advanced settings.
In advanced network settings you will see a new button for QoS marking settings. Under QoS Tagging Settings, there are two options: DSCP Tagging Enabled and WMM Tagging Enabled.
