Hard West 2 is the new turn-based strategy and role-playing game from ice code games. They take over from CreativeForge Games, studio in charge of the first part. In the game, we embark on a supernatural journey into the dark heart of the West. We gathered a gang of outlaws with weapons loaded with lead and sorcery at our disposal and we’ll hunt down the devil to get back what’s ours.
Before we start talking about the beta, we want to clarify that this is, forgive the redundancy, a beta version and as such can be improved and is not representative of the final quality of the game.
Hard West 2 it is, in short and with tweezers, and XCOM western but supernatural and with a touch of exploration. Each character in the group has its own inventory, in which we can equip them as we wish with a variety of ranged or melee weapons. We also have various objects that we can assign to each such as dynamite, food or alcohol, but more on that later.
Hard West 2 beta launch
We start the adventure when we decided to rob a train with our gang. The game takes advantage of this moment to teach us the commands and others, acting as a tutorial. Finishing with the enemies, the game already leaves us a little alone and we continue to move forward on the train.
Arriving at the locomotive, it turns out that the train is not a normal train, but a ghost train and the devil himself its driver. We fight against the devil but it doesn’t seem that we can with him so we offer him something, a game of poker. If we win, the train is ours, but if we lose, our souls become their property.. Obviously, this is not going well since the devil knows more about being old than about being a devilwe lose the game and find ourselves outside the train.
We woke up surrounded by snow, for some reason it’s snowing in the west nowwith some of our companions and this is where our adventure begins. We have a map to explore in which we will find several interesting things. Trails to follow, side quests, caves, towns, bandit hideouts and more.
Game mechanics and technical theme
Occasionally we may camp to talk with our group and, in case we have supplies, recover life. During conversations we can increase the level of affinity we have with that party member depending on our response, thus unlocking new dialogue options and other special actions.
During the fights we see that It’s a turn-based strategy game in the purest style XCOMwe have an area where we can move and cover ourselves so they don’t hurt us. We can use different covers, we also have skills that we can use by spending character action points.
In the world there are also shops in which to buy weapons, items and a few other special things useful in certain side missions. we can also sell what we don’t need.
As for the duration of the beta, it is short, about two hours This allowed us to explore the entire available map and do anything secondary. Beta short but enough to leave honey on our lips.
Technically the game is developed with Unity and graphically, it is far superior to the first opus. Performance is quite stable and we only had occasional visual bugs, a tree flew away but nothing else. The game’s configuration options are quite complete, you can touch almost everything, in addition is ultra wide compatible.
Final Beta Notice
Ultimately, Hard West 2 it’s super fun and addictive, graphically beautiful and pleasant to listen to. The beta might be a little short on content, but it gives us a general idea of where the shots will go (hehe), we’ll be happy to give a hard time the final version when released this year for PC.
